NCL Partners with MoTA to Empower 42 EMRS with ₹5 Cr CSR

RR Team, September 16, 2025September 16, 2025
New Delhi, Sept 16: In a landmark initiative, Northern Coalfields Ltd (NCL) has partnered with the Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA) to strengthen infrastructure and digital education in 42 Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) across Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Under this project, NCL will contribute ₹5 crore from its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) fund to support tribal students.
The initiative will see the provision of 950 computers, 950 UPS units, 90 tablets, 430 sanitary pad vending machines, and 430 incinerators, benefitting more than 26,000 tribal students, including 13,500 girls. The CSR project will be implemented by the National Scheduled Tribes Finance and Development Corporation (NSTFDC), a Section 8 Company under the Ministry.

Enhancing Digital Education

Digital literacy is a critical 21st-century skill, and the project aims to equip students with hands-on knowledge of computers and internet-based learning. By establishing well-equipped digital labs, the initiative complements existing MoTA programs such as Digital Tutoring for IIT-JEE and NEET, and the Digital Transformation Program. These measures are designed to enable tribal youth to access modern educational resources and develop innovative problem-solving skills.

Promoting Health and Hygiene

Alongside technology upgrades, the initiative focuses on menstrual health and hygiene for girl students. The installation of 430 sanitary pad vending machines and incinerators aims to improve retention rates, academic performance, and overall well-being of female students, creating a more inclusive learning environment.

About EMRS and Tribal Education

The Ministry of Tribal Affairs established EMRS to provide high-quality education, nutrition, and holistic development for Scheduled Tribe children. With 479 functional EMRS across India, these schools aim to prepare students for higher education and professional opportunities, ultimately empowering them to secure gainful employment.

Recognizing the potential of CSR to complement government funding, MoTA, led by Shri Jual Oram, has been actively engaging companies to invest in tribal education initiatives. The NCL partnership aligns with the Janjatiya Gaurav Varsh and the government’s vision of digital inclusion and quality education for tribal youth.
