A Milestone in Railway Expansion
The country’s first Rajdhani Express was introduced in 1969 on the New Delhi–Howrah route. Since then, the network has grown steadily, with 25 Rajdhani Express trains currently operating across India. The upcoming Sairang–Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express will become the 26th in this prestigious category.
The train will run three times a week, covering a distance of more than 2,500 kilometers in under 44 hours. For the people of Mizoram, this direct connection to Delhi will be a historic first, reducing travel time and improving access to the national capital.
Bairabi–Sairang Railway Line: An Engineering Feat
The launch of the new Rajdhani has been made possible by the completion of the Bairabi–Sairang railway line. The 51.38-kilometer stretch, built at a cost of approximately ₹8,000 crore, will be inaugurated by PM Modi on the same day. The project includes 48 tunnels, 55 major bridges, and 87 minor bridges, making it one of the most challenging engineering works in the region.
The total tunnel length in the project is 12,853 meters, and Bridge No. 196 rises 104 meters high — taller than Delhi’s iconic Qutub Minar by 42 meters. Passenger trains will be able to run at speeds of up to 100 kmph along the line, ensuring efficient travel across difficult terrain.
Boost to Northeast Connectivity
The new Rajdhani Express is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Mizoram and the rest of India. Until now, the northeastern state has remained one of the least connected by rail. With this launch, Mizoram will be directly integrated into the Indian Railways’ premium network.
Railway officials said the move reflects the government’s broader push to enhance infrastructure and economic integration in the Northeast. It is also expected to promote tourism and trade, opening new avenues of development for the region.
Historical Significance
Launched over five decades ago, the Rajdhani Express service was designed to connect state capitals with New Delhi. Even today, it remains synonymous with speed, comfort, and reliability. The introduction of the Sairang–Anand Vihar route not only expands the network but also brings Mizoram closer to the national mainstream.
The development highlights Indian Railways’ focus on integrating remote regions with major metropolitan hubs. With the new route, Mizoram will join the ranks of other northeastern states like Assam, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh, which already enjoy Rajdhani Express connectivity.
