NHRC Launches 2025 Summer Internship Programme

RR Team, June 18, 2025June 19, 2025

Diverse Interns Unite for Human Rights

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has kicked off its 4-week Summer Internship Programme (SIP) 2025 in New Delhi. Launched on June 16, the initiative aims to foster a deeper understanding of human rights among university students from across the nation.Out of 1,468 applicants, 80 students from 42 institutions across 20 States and UTs have been selected. These interns come from a wide range of academic disciplines, including Law, Social Sciences, Psychology, Journalism, Gender Studies, and International Relations.

Chairperson Urges Youth to Lead with Empathy

Inaugurating the programme, NHRC Chairperson Justice Shri V. Ramasubramanian praised India’s unity in diversity, reflected in the background of participating interns. He emphasized the importance of peer learning and called on interns to actively engage in shaping a society that upholds justice and equality for all.

“A child is raised by many influences — family, peers, and community. In the same way, learning is layered and shared. You must lead with justice and empathy,” he said.

Youth as Catalysts of Human Rights

NHRC Secretary General Shri Bharat Lal delivered the keynote address, highlighting the crucial role of youth in advancing the cause of human rights in India. He urged them to balance rights with responsibilities while staying rooted in India’s civilizational values of compassion and inclusion.

He encouraged students to use this opportunity to develop sensitivity, responsiveness, and social purpose — qualities that can shape a more just future.

Interactive Learning for Real-World Impact

Joint Secretary Shri Samir Kumar provided an overview of the SIP, detailing how the programme combines interactive sessions, group projects, book reviews, declamations, and field visits to Police Stations, Prisons, NGOs, Shelter Homes, and other commissions.

Director Lt. Col. Virender Singh concluded the event with a vote of thanks, urging interns to take forward their learning beyond the classroom.

Looking Ahead: Empowering Tomorrow’s Leaders

With participation from students across India, NHRC’s Summer Internship Programme 2025 sets the stage for nurturing future leaders in the field of human rights. This initiative not only raises awareness but also equips students with tools and perspectives to bring about positive change.

As India continues to build a more inclusive society, empowering young minds through such programmes becomes all the more critical.
