Programme Inaugurated by NHRC Chairperson
The internship programme was formally inaugurated by NHRC Chairperson, Justice V. Ramasubramanian, in the presence of Secretary General Shri Bharat Lal and senior officers of the Commission. Addressing the interns, Justice Ramasubramanian highlighted the significance of the OSTI in fulfilling NHRC’s mandate under the Protection of Human Rights Act.
He explained that the programme is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the promotion and protection of human rights in India, combining academic inputs with real-world exposure.
Emphasis on Compassion and Indian Values
Justice Ramasubramanian urged the interns to imbibe compassion and forgiveness, describing them as hallmarks of India’s age-old traditions and cultural ethos. Quoting shlokas from ancient Indian scriptures, including the Rigveda, he underlined that human values have always been central to Indian society.
He encouraged participants to develop sensitivity towards the suffering of others and stressed that becoming better human beings is essential before aspiring to become successful professionals.
Internship Aims to Create Human Rights Ambassadors
Earlier, Secretary General of NHRC, Shri Bharat Lal, said that the internship programme seeks to sensitise young people and nurture them as defenders and ambassadors of human rights. He advised the interns to absorb the knowledge and values shared by eminent speakers during the course.
He noted that human rights are not confined to statutes or judicial pronouncements but are rooted in lived experiences, daily conduct and societal behaviour. According to him, understanding grievances and observing values in action are crucial to preventing human rights violations.
Curriculum Blends Theory with Practical Exposure
Joint Secretary NHRC, Smt. Saidingpuii Chhakchhuak, provided a detailed overview of the programme’s carefully curated curriculum. The internship includes expert lectures, interactive sessions and virtual tours of key institutions such as Tihar Jail, police stations and shelter homes.
These virtual engagements are aimed at giving interns first-hand insights into the realities of human rights administration and challenges faced on the ground. Various activities and competitions have also been planned to enhance learning and boost participants’ confidence.
Nationwide Participation Reflects Youth Engagement
The selection of interns from a wide range of academic backgrounds and geographical regions reflects NHRC’s inclusive approach. The Commission believes that engaging students early will help build a strong foundation for a rights-conscious society.
Senior NHRC officials, including Lt. Col. Virender Singh, Director NHRC, and officers from the Training Division, were present during the inaugural session.
Strengthening Human Rights Awareness
The Online Short Term Internship Programme has emerged as a key initiative of the NHRC to promote awareness, empathy and responsible citizenship among young Indians. By combining traditional values with contemporary human rights discourse, the Commission aims to nurture informed and compassionate future leaders.
