NHRC Launches September 2025 Online Human Rights Internship

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has officially inaugurated its Online Short Term Internship Programme (OSTI) for September 2025. Out of 896 applications, 80 students from 21 States and Union Territories have been selected to participate in this two-week virtual programme, which runs from 22nd September to 3rd October 2025.

Fostering Youth Awareness on Human Rights

In his inaugural address, NHRC Secretary General Shri Bharat Lal highlighted that the internship aims to nurture awareness, empathy, and responsibility among the youth towards human rights. Emphasizing that human rights are dynamic, he stressed the importance of public engagement and constant re-evaluation to address modern challenges such as climate change, cybercrime, artificial intelligence, and gig economy exploitation.

Shri Lal encouraged interns to actively participate, pose questions, and internalize principles like justice, dignity, and fairness, with the vision of becoming ambassadors of human rights in their personal and professional lives.

Focus on Emerging Human Rights Issues

The programme places special emphasis on contemporary human rights challenges, including business and human rights, labour rights, and climate-induced displacement. Shri Lal remarked that true leadership requires not only taking action against injustice but also refusing to remain silent or complicit, urging interns to engage in self-reflection and purposeful societal contributions.

Structured Curriculum and Experiential Learning

NHRC Joint Secretary Smt. Saidingpuii Chhakchhuak welcomed the interns and outlined the comprehensive curriculum. The programme combines interactive lectures with virtual tours of institutions such as Tihar Jail, Shelter Homes, and police stations, offering students direct insights into real-world human rights practices.

Participants will also engage in activities and competitions designed to enhance understanding and confidence in human rights advocacy. These sessions aim to provide students from varied academic disciplines with the knowledge and competencies needed to address challenges in both national and international human rights frameworks.

Building Future Human Rights Advocates

Through this meticulously designed online internship, participants will gain exposure to Indian and international human rights law, key issues affecting society, and strategies for effective advocacy. The programme’s holistic approach ensures that students are equipped to contribute meaningfully to the promotion and protection of human rights, fostering a generation of informed and responsible citizens.
