Student Assault and Death
According to media reports, the victim, a Zimbabwean national enrolled in a graduation program at Guru Kashi University in Talwandi Sabo, was attacked on 13 August 2025. He reportedly had an altercation with a security guard the previous day, which escalated into an assault involving the guard and his associates. The student sustained severe injuries and succumbed to them at AIIMS Bathinda on 21 August 2025.
NHRC Issues Notices
The Commission observed that the reported facts, if true, point to grave violations of human rights. It has, therefore, issued notices to the Director General of Police (DGP), Punjab, and the Registrar of Guru Kashi University, Bathinda. Both authorities have been directed to submit a detailed report within two weeks.
The NHRC’s intervention aims to ensure accountability and prevent the recurrence of such incidents. It will closely monitor the investigation being carried out by the Punjab Police, where an FIR has already been registered against the accused individuals.
Concerns Over International Student Safety
The incident has once again brought attention to the safety of international students studying in India. Universities hosting foreign nationals are expected to ensure their well-being, security, and a safe learning environment. The reported involvement of a university security staff member in the assault raises questions about institutional responsibility.
