NHRC to Hear Rights Violation Cases in Odisha Camp

RR Team, July 20, 2025July 19, 2025

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India will hold a significant two-day Camp Sitting in Bhubaneswar, Odisha on 21st and 22nd July, 2025. This special hearing will address a range of alleged human rights violations reported from across the state.

Senior NHRC officials, state authorities, and complainants will participate in this vital event. The aim is to deliver on-the-spot justice and highlight systemic issues affecting vulnerable communities in Odisha.

Key Focus: Human Rights Violations in Odisha

The Camp Sitting will take place at the State Guest House Unit V, Keshari Nagar, Bhubaneswar. NHRC Chairperson Justice V. Ramasubramanian, along with members Justice (Dr.) Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi, Smt. Vijaya Bharathi Sayani, and Shri Priyank Kanoongo, will preside over the hearings.

Also present will be NHRC Secretary General Shri Bharat Lal, Registrar (Law) Shri Joginder Singh, and other senior officers.

Cases to be Heard

The Commission will address a wide range of human rights issues including:

  • Attacks on journalists, human rights defenders (HRDs), and their families
  • Crimes against women and girls, including cases under POCSO
  • Trafficking of children during the Covid-19 pandemic
  • Deaths due to snake bites and lack of medical facilities in rural areas
  • Flood-related issues in Bhadrak, Kendrapada and other coastal districts
  • Incidents of witchcraft and sorcery-related violence

These cases reflect the urgent need for better governance, healthcare, child safety, and protection of free press in Odisha.

Promoting Accountability and Dialogue

The NHRC has instructed state authorities and complainants to attend in person. This will ensure swift resolutions and direct accountability.

After the hearings, NHRC will meet with the Chief Secretary, DGP, and other top state officials. The purpose is to review current human rights protection mechanisms and suggest improvements.

Interaction with Civil Society

On 22nd July, the NHRC will engage in a critical interactive session with NGOs, civil society organisations, and human rights defenders. These interactions play a key role in bridging the gap between policy implementation and ground realities.

Later, a press briefing will be held to communicate the outcomes and highlight steps taken by the Commission to protect human rights in the state.

NHRC’s History of Camp Sittings

Since 2007, NHRC has conducted Camp Sittings across India to increase accessibility and deliver justice faster. States that have hosted such sittings include Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Assam, Manipur, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and many others.

Odisha has been a frequent focus due to its unique social and geographical challenges that often lead to recurring human rights issues, especially among women, children, tribals, and the poor.

Why This Matters

This Camp Sitting highlights the NHRC’s commitment to reaching the grassroots. Victims in remote regions often struggle to access justice. By holding sessions in state capitals, the Commission ensures their voices are heard directly.

It also places pressure on local administrations to address systemic problems — be it poor healthcare access, unsafe living conditions, or gender-based violence.

Looking Ahead

NHRC’s Odisha sitting comes at a time when public awareness around civil liberties and freedom of expression is growing. It serves as a reminder that democratic institutions must work tirelessly to ensure no citizen is denied justice.

Such interventions can be transformative, especially when victims, officials, and civil society all come together under one roof.

Conclusion

The NHRC Camp Sitting in Odisha is a beacon of hope for many. It reflects the power of decentralised justice and inclusive governance. As human rights challenges evolve, such proactive efforts will remain crucial in shaping a just and equitable society.
