NIFT Launches Scholarships for Textile Research

RR Team, August 6, 2025August 5, 2025

The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), under the Ministry of Textiles, is taking bold steps to strengthen India’s textile and apparel research ecosystem. With its newly announced Teaching Fellowships, scholarships for weavers’ children, and a strong push for industry-based projects, NIFT is empowering students and researchers alike.

Teaching Fellowship for Research Scholars

NIFT is actively encouraging full-time Ph.D. candidates through its Teaching Fellowship programme. This support includes:

  • Monthly stipend for financial stability
  • Contingency grant for research expenses
  • House Rent Allowance (HRA)

The fellowship extends up to four years, ensuring long-term support for dedicated scholars. Those not receiving this fellowship can still pursue research through roles like Project Fellows or Industry Chair Fellows funded by external collaborations.

Industry-Based Research Projects for Students

Beyond doctoral research, NIFT is investing in the practical skills of undergraduate and postgraduate students. In their final semester, students can engage in sponsored, industry-based research projects.

Each project includes:

  • An academic mentor from NIFT
  • An industry mentor from the sponsoring organization

This dual mentorship ensures that students not only gain real-world experience but also contribute to ongoing innovation in fashion and textiles.

Scholarships for Handloom Weavers’ Children

In a heartwarming move, NIFT is offering financial support to children of handloom workers. The scholarship provides up to ₹2 lakh per annum for each child (up to two children per family) pursuing:

  • 3- or 4-year diploma courses
  • Undergraduate degrees
  • Postgraduate degrees

The courses must be offered by Central or State Government recognized textile institutions. This step ensures that the children of artisans, who are the backbone of India’s textile heritage, have access to quality education and brighter futures.

UGC Pushes Curriculum Reform in Technical Textiles

To align education with industry needs, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued fresh guidelines. Higher education institutions are now encouraged to design and submit proposals for courses in technical textiles.

This initiative is part of the broader National Technical Textile Mission (NTTM), launched to enhance India’s capabilities in advanced textiles and smart fabrics.

Government’s Vision for Textile Education

These efforts reflect a larger vision of transforming India into a global leader in textile innovation. By nurturing talent, strengthening academia-industry linkages, and supporting underprivileged communities, the government is ensuring that the next generation of textile professionals is future-ready.

This announcement was made by Minister of State for Textiles Shri Pabitra Margherita during a written reply in the Lok Sabha on August 5, 2025.

Conclusion

NIFT’s proactive policies are shaping the future of textile research and education in India. Whether it’s a budding Ph.D. scholar, a final-year student, or a weaver’s child dreaming big — there’s now support, opportunity, and recognition for all.
