NITI Aayog Supports Rural Microenterprises and Women

New Delhi, June 4, 2025 – The Rural Development Division of NITI Aayog organized a National Seminar on ‘Strengthening Rural Microenterprises’ at its headquarters in New Delhi. The event focused on strategies to boost rural entrepreneurship, especially women-led initiatives, and emphasized the importance of inclusive growth for India’s development.

The seminar brought together key stakeholders — policymakers, grassroots entrepreneurs, technology providers, banks, industry leaders, CSR groups, and international agencies. The goal was to explore effective models and partnerships to empower small rural businesses.

🔑 Key Focus Areas:

1. Role of Rural Microenterprises in Inclusive Growth:
Speakers highlighted that rural microenterprises play a major role in reducing regional inequalities and generating local employment. They are also crucial to enhancing women’s economic participation and achieving sustainable development goals.

2. Women-Led Businesses in the Spotlight:
A special session celebrated successful stories of women entrepreneurs, particularly the ‘Lakhpati Didis’ — women from self-help groups (SHGs) who have built profitable businesses in rural India. The Women Entrepreneurship Platform (WEP) was praised for helping women-led businesses scale up.

3. Access to Finance and Digital Tools:
The event stressed the importance of affordable credit, blended finance models, and CSR funding to help small entrepreneurs thrive. Discussions also focused on the need to simplify regulations and improve last-mile digital connectivity so that even the remotest villages can access digital tools and markets.

4. Unlocking E-Commerce Potential:
Participants highlighted the importance of platforms like the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) in bringing rural businesses into the digital economy. By connecting rural producers directly to consumers, such platforms can help microenterprises expand their reach and income.

5. Private Sector and Institutional Support:
There was a strong call for public-private partnerships, involving corporates, financial institutions, and local governments to create sustainable business ecosystems. Capacity building, market training, and infrastructure support were identified as critical needs.

6. Convergence of Government Schemes:
Speakers noted the importance of coordinated implementation of central and state government schemes. This would ensure that rural entrepreneurs receive the support they need — from training and credit to market access and innovation support.

🌱 Sustainability and Innovation:

The final session showcased inspiring work by young green entrepreneurs who are using eco-friendly innovations to solve rural problems. These examples illustrated how rural development and sustainability can go hand in hand through local innovation.

🤝 Key Takeaways:

The seminar concluded on a high note with several young entrepreneurs presenting their success stories. NITI Aayog reaffirmed its commitment to putting rural microenterprises at the heart of India’s growth journey, especially by unlocking the potential of rural women and green innovations.
