Nitish Kumar to Open APJ Abdul Kalam Science City Patna

RR Team, September 20, 2025September 20, 2025
Patna is set to witness a landmark moment on Sunday as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar inaugurates the APJ Abdul Kalam Science City, a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to promoting scientific learning and curiosity. Located near the Moin-ul-Haq Stadium, the sprawling complex has been developed over 20.5 acres by the Building Construction Department (BCD) as a tribute to India’s “Missile Man” and former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.

A Tribute to APJ Abdul Kalam

The science city aims to inspire young minds through hi-tech exhibits and interactive learning experiences. At the heart of the atrium, a 163-cm silicon statue of Dr. Kalam has been installed for visitors, complemented by digital panels narrating his life and achievements. Officials hope the centre will not only celebrate his legacy but also ignite curiosity among future generations.

Galleries and Exhibits

According to BCD Secretary Kumar Ravi, the science city features five major galleries spread across 7,725 square meters. These include Be a Scientist, Basic Science, Sustainable Planet, Space and Astronomy, and Body and Mind. Together, they will showcase 269 exhibits across 26 themes.

The Be a Scientist gallery, developed in collaboration with the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM) and Creative Museum Designers, has 12 interactive exhibits. Highlights include harmonic strings demonstrating sound vibrations, a 3D Zoetrope for optical illusions, ripple tanks for wave patterns, models of NASA’s Curiosity Rover, and levitating water displays that defy gravity. Visitors will also learn about renowned scientists such as C.V. Raman and James Clerk Maxwell.

The Basic Science gallery features 30 exhibits exploring mathematics and modern concepts such as the decimal and binary systems, the golden ratio, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data analysis. A Foucault pendulum, designed to demonstrate Earth’s rotation, is a special attraction.

Learning Through Entertainment

Beyond galleries, the science city boasts multiple learning spaces designed to engage students and families. A 500-seat auditorium will screen 3D science films, while a 4D theatre on the ground floor promises immersive experiences. An open-sky theatre with seating for 150 people has also been created for live demonstrations and shows.

The centre includes multipurpose halls for workshops, an atrium for events, and dormitories that can accommodate 150 students and three teachers. The dormitories are expected to facilitate educational tours, offering meals and overnight stays for visiting groups.

Facilities for Visitors

The science city is equipped with visitor-friendly amenities including a cafeteria, restrooms, drinking water stations, and parking areas. Authorities expect it to become a major educational and tourist attraction, drawing students, teachers, and science enthusiasts from across Bihar and beyond.

An MoU with NCSM is in its final stages to equip the remaining galleries, with full operations expected to begin soon. Officials are confident that the centre will evolve into a hub for science education and innovation.

Boost for Science Education in Bihar

The inauguration of the APJ Abdul Kalam Science City represents a significant step in Bihar’s efforts to promote STEM education. With interactive galleries and modern infrastructure, the facility is expected to complement classroom learning and nurture future innovators.
