The MoU was signed by Mr. Satyendra Rai, Executive Director (Digital Transformation) at NMDC, and Prof. Ashoke De, Dean of Research & Development at IIT Kanpur. Senior representatives from both institutions, including IIT Kanpur Director Prof. Manindra Agrawal, were present during the ceremony. The partnership is expected to set new benchmarks for digital capability-building within the Indian mining sector.
Strengthening Cybersecurity Across the Mining Value Chain
Mining companies worldwide face increasing cyber threats as operations become digitally integrated. NMDC’s large-scale infrastructure, including automated machinery, logistics systems, and mineral processing units, requires advanced protection against cyberattacks. Through this collaboration, IIT Kanpur’s expertise will support NMDC’s efforts to develop robust cybersecurity policies, conduct regular risk assessments, and improve real-time response mechanisms.
According to NMDC officials, the partnership will help the organisation build a layered security system that minimizes vulnerabilities and ensures business continuity even under emerging digital risks. IIT Kanpur’s established cybersecurity research ecosystem, including its specialised centres and laboratories, provides a strong foundation for this strategic initiative.
AI and ML to Power Smart Mining
Beyond cybersecurity, the MoU lays significant focus on the development and adoption of AI and ML technologies. These advanced tools are expected to transform NMDC’s mining operations by improving predictive maintenance, enhancing ore quality management, and optimising logistics planning. With AI-powered insights, the company aims to reduce operational downtime and improve decision-making accuracy across its mines.
IIT Kanpur’s researchers will work closely with NMDC teams to co-develop prototypes, design proof-of-concept digital solutions, and run pilot projects at operational sites. This hands-on approach will allow both institutions to test and refine technologies before large-scale deployment.
Focus Areas of Collaboration
The NMDC–IIT Kanpur partnership outlines several key areas of cooperation that will collectively strengthen the mining giant’s digital resilience and technological advancement:
- Comprehensive cybersecurity risk assessment and mitigation planning
- Strengthening policy, governance, and compliance frameworks
- Adopting advanced AI and ML technologies for operational excellence
- Enhancing real-time incident response and threat monitoring
- Building capacity through specialised training and knowledge-sharing initiatives
- Joint research, innovation, and development of digital solutions
Training, Capacity Building, and Long-Term Innovation
Recognising the need for skilled talent in managing modern digital systems, the MoU includes provisions for training programs and workshops for NMDC engineers and staff. IIT Kanpur will design structured modules covering cybersecurity fundamentals, AI-ML concepts, and sector-specific applications relevant to mining operations.
Both organisations will also explore joint research opportunities in areas such as automation, data analytics, computer vision, drone surveillance, and digital governance. These innovations are expected to strengthen NMDC’s long-term digital roadmap and support the broader vision of a technologically empowered mining industry.
Leadership Speaks: A Future-Ready Collaboration
Shri Amitava Mukherjee, CMD of NMDC, described the MoU as a transformative milestone. He noted that IIT Kanpur’s advanced research ecosystem will significantly enhance NMDC’s capability to manage digital risks, improve operational intelligence, and lay the groundwork for secure and efficient mining practices in the coming years.
