NMDC Steel First in India to Get BIS License for Pipeline Steel

NMDC Steel Limited (NSL), India’s state-of-the-art integrated steel plant, has become the first company in the country to receive the Indian Standards (IS) license for Hot Rolled Steel Strip, Sheet, and Plates for Welded Steel Pipe for Pipeline Transportation Systems (IS 18384:2023). The milestone was achieved during the World Standards Day 2025 celebration held by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in Raipur.

BIS Certification Ceremony

The BIS certification was presented to Shri Amrit Narayan, Chief General Manager (Steel), NMDC Steel, by the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Shri Vishnu Deo Sai, in the presence of Shri Dayal Das Baghel, Minister of Food & Civil Supplies, and Shri S.K. Gupta, Director & Head, BIS Raipur. The recognition underscores NMDC Steel’s commitment to superior quality, technological innovation, and sustainable development.

Enhancing Industrial Standards

The IS 18384:2023 certification establishes a benchmark for excellence in steel products designed for pipeline transportation in the petroleum and natural gas sectors. It validates NMDC Steel’s focus on advanced manufacturing practices, high-quality products, and adherence to global safety and performance standards.

Leadership Statements

Shri Amitava Mukherjee, CMD of NMDC Steel, said: “We are proud to be the first in India to receive this BIS license. This recognition is a testament to our dedication to excellence and contribution towards strengthening India’s industrial standards and infrastructure.”

With a production capacity of 3.0 MTPA, NMDC Steel continues to bolster India’s self-reliance in the steel sector and meet growing domestic demand for high-grade steel products.
