NMIA Handles 1 Lakh Passengers in 19 Days

RR Team, January 16, 2026January 16, 2026

The Adani Group-backed Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has reached a significant operational milestone by handling over one lakh passengers within just 19 days of starting commercial flight services. The achievement underlines the strong travel demand in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and signals a promising future for India’s newest greenfield airport.

According to Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd (NMIAL), the airport handled a total of 1,09,917 passengers between December 25, when commercial operations began, and January 12. Of these, 55,934 were arriving passengers, while 53,983 departed from the facility.

Busiest Day and Rapid Traffic Growth

January 10 emerged as the busiest day so far, with 7,345 passengers travelling through the airport. Officials said the steady rise in passenger numbers reflects growing confidence among airlines and travellers in the new airport’s infrastructure and operational readiness.

The airport recorded 734 air traffic movements during the period, including 32 general aviation flights. This includes both arrivals and departures, showcasing a rapid ramp-up in flight operations within weeks of launch.

Strong Baggage and Cargo Handling

Along with passenger traffic, NMIA has demonstrated strong handling capacity for baggage and cargo. During the first 19 days, the airport processed 40,260 arriving bags and 38,774 departing bags, highlighting efficient ground operations and baggage management systems.

In addition, the airport handled 22.21 tonnes of cargo, underlining its integrated approach to passenger and cargo services from the outset. Aviation experts believe this dual focus will help NMIA emerge as a key logistics and trade hub in western India.

Top Routes and Connectivity

In terms of passenger connectivity, Delhi, Goa, and Bengaluru have emerged as the busiest sectors from Navi Mumbai International Airport. These routes indicate a mix of business, leisure, and connecting travel demand.

Airlines are expected to add more domestic destinations in the coming months, followed by the introduction of international routes once regulatory approvals and capacity expansion are completed.

Capacity and Future Expansion Plans

Navi Mumbai International Airport has been developed with an initial capacity to handle 20 million passengers annually. The airport is expected to significantly reduce congestion at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and support long-term aviation growth in the region.

NMIAL stated that with modern infrastructure, streamlined passenger processing, and a focus on operational efficiency, the airport will continue to scale up services in a calibrated and sustainable manner.

Boost to Regional Economy

Industry observers say the rapid uptake of the Navi Mumbai airport is a positive sign for Maharashtra’s economy. Improved air connectivity is expected to boost tourism, business travel, cargo movement, and employment generation across Navi Mumbai and surrounding areas.

As flight frequency increases and more airlines come on board, the airport is likely to play a crucial role in strengthening India’s aviation infrastructure and supporting the country’s economic growth.
