Notorious Sharpshooter Arrested in Patna Police Encounter

Patna police arrested Amit Kumar, a notorious sharpshooter from Vaishali district, after a tense encounter on Marine Drive under the Pirbahor police jurisdiction early Sunday. Kumar sustained a bullet injury to his leg during the operation and is currently receiving treatment at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH).

Police Operation and Arrest

According to City SP Mamta Kalyani, authorities received a tip-off about Kumar’s presence and alleged plans to commit a serious crime. A team was immediately deployed to conduct a thorough search. “Seeing the police team, Kumar opened fire in an attempt to flee. Officers exercised maximum restraint and returned fire in self-defense, resulting in a leg injury,” SP Kalyani said.

A pistol was recovered from the scene, and the stretch of Marine Drive was sealed for investigation. Forensic experts from the FSL, along with Town DSP Rajesh Ranjan, the District Intelligence Unit (DIU), and the Special Task Force (STF), supervised the operation.

Criminal Background

Kumar has a long criminal record and was wanted in multiple cases. On January 27, 2025, he allegedly attempted to assassinate Roshan Tatiya, affiliated with the Subodh Singh gang, at the Patna civil court premises. His accomplice, Piyush, was intercepted by security, while Kumar escaped. Interrogation revealed that Kumar had transported Piyush to the court on his motorcycle and had been absconding since then.

“Kumar will be interrogated to trace the gang or individual who contracted the planned crime,” SP Kalyani added.

Security Measures and Investigation

The police maintained strict control over the area during the arrest, ensuring the safety of local residents and onlookers. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and collecting additional evidence to strengthen the case. Investigation continues under the supervision of senior officials.
