NSO Hosts Data User Conference on Time Use Survey 2024

RR Team, September 21, 2025September 21, 2025
The National Statistics Office (NSO), under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), in collaboration with the Centre for Development Studies (CDS), Thiruvananthapuram, is organizing a Data User’s Conference on Time Use Survey (TUS) 2024 on September 22, 2025, in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The conference aims to strengthen engagement between data producers and users, offering insights into how TUS data informs socio-economic policymaking in India.

Understanding Time Use Survey 2024

The Time Use Survey provides detailed data on how individuals allocate time across paid and unpaid work, care responsibilities, learning, and leisure activities. Building on the 2019 survey, TUS 2024 offers comparative insights into evolving work and life patterns, gender roles, and socio-economic dynamics in India’s digital era.

Inaugural Session and Key Participants

The conference will be inaugurated by eminent dignitaries, including Shri K. M. Chandrasekhar, Former Cabinet Secretary; Dr. Saurabh Garg, IAS, Secretary of MoSPI; Dr. Indira Hirway, Former Director of Centre for Development Alternatives; Prof. Veeramani, Director of CDS; and Ms. Geeta Singh Rathore, Director General, National Sample Survey (NSS). The inaugural session will highlight the significance of TUS in shaping inclusive and evidence-based policies.

Technical Sessions and Panel Discussion

Approximately 175 participants, including researchers, economists, policymakers, international organization representatives, civil society members, academics, and media personnel, will attend. Technical sessions will focus on survey design, methodology, and key findings, emphasizing the strategic application of TUS data in policymaking. Experts will present comparative insights across survey rounds to illustrate changes in work patterns and time allocation.

A panel discussion on “Changing Patterns of Time Use, Care Work, and Gender in the Digital Era” will feature distinguished speakers such as Dr. Sunny Jose, Dean, School of Humanities and Sciences, SRM University; Prof. Neetha N, Centre for Women’s Development Studies (CWDS); Smt. Deepti Sharma, Visiting Assistant Professor, IIM Ahmedabad; and Prof. Thiagu Ranganathan, CDS. They will explore the impact of digitalization on work, care responsibilities, and gender dynamics.

Policy Relevance and Outcomes

The conference aims to foster a deeper understanding of TUS data among policymakers and stakeholders, highlighting its role in shaping gender-sensitive, inclusive policies. Open interactions will allow participants to discuss applications of TUS findings in employment, care work, and social welfare programs. The deliberations are expected to reinforce MoSPI’s commitment to enhancing India’s statistical infrastructure and data-driven decision-making.
