Nutrition Awareness Boosts in Tribal Madhya Pradesh

RR Team, September 20, 2025September 20, 2025
Bhopal, September 20: As part of Poshan Maah 2025, tribal communities in Madhya Pradesh witnessed a series of counselling and sensitization sessions focused on health, nutrition, and lifestyle awareness. The initiatives were conducted in Sheopur and Mandla districts, aiming to address malnutrition, obesity, and healthy food habits among women and adolescents.

Sheopur: Focus on Food Habits and Obesity

In Sheopur, a community counselling session highlighted the importance of balanced nutrition and the dangers of excessive consumption of processed and high-fat foods. Experts emphasized the need to adopt traditional diets that include millets, green leafy vegetables, and seasonal fruits, which are both affordable and rich in nutrients.

The session, attended by community members including women and adolescents, also stressed the risks of obesity and related health complications. Participants actively engaged in discussions, making the session interactive and effective in spreading awareness.

Mandla: Teaching Adolescents the Importance of BMI

In Mandla district, the Anganwadi Centre hosted a sensitization session on Body Mass Index (BMI) for adolescents. Health workers explained how BMI serves as an important indicator of nutritional status and overall health. Adolescents were taught to calculate their BMI, interpret the results, and understand corrective measures through balanced diets and regular physical activity.

The initiative aimed to help young people recognize the long-term health impacts of poor nutrition and unhealthy lifestyles. By linking BMI awareness with everyday dietary practices, the session empowered adolescents to take charge of their health.

Building Health Awareness in Tribal Communities

These counselling efforts reflect a growing commitment to improve health and nutrition education in tribal regions. Vulnerable groups such as women and adolescents, often at higher risk of malnutrition and related health issues, were given priority in these programs. The sessions also promoted the consumption of locally available, nutrient-rich foods, helping communities make sustainable dietary choices.

Poshan Maah, celebrated every September, continues to act as a platform for creating awareness on nutrition and encouraging healthy practices across India. The focus on tribal districts underscores the government’s effort to reach remote and underserved populations.
