Odisha Med Student Gang-Raped in West Bengal

RR Team, October 11, 2025October 11, 2025
Kolkata, October 11: A medical student from Odisha was allegedly gang-raped by unidentified men in Durgapur, West Bengal’s Paschim Bardhaman district, on Friday night, police officials said on Saturday. The incident has triggered concern across both states, prompting swift administrative and legal responses.

Incident Outside Medical College Campus

According to the police, the second-year medical student, who hails from Jaleswar in Odisha, had stepped out of her private medical college campus in Durgapur around 8:30 p.m. on October 10 for dinner with a friend. Her family alleged that she was attacked and sexually assaulted later that night by three unidentified men outside the campus area.

The accused allegedly snatched her mobile phone and took her to a nearby forested area, where the assault reportedly occurred. Police said the victim was threatened with severe consequences if she reported the crime. The student is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital and is said to be in a stable condition.

Family Lodges Complaint; Probe Underway

The survivor’s parents arrived in Durgapur on Saturday morning after being informed by her friends. They lodged a formal complaint with the local police station. “We came here this morning and filed a complaint. We trusted this college because of its reputation,” her father told reporters.

Police have registered a case based on the complaint and initiated a full investigation. “We have recorded the statement of the survivor and her friend. Efforts are on to trace the accused. A forensic team will visit the site to collect evidence,” a senior officer said.

National Commission for Women Steps In

A team from the National Commission for Women (NCW) is on its way to Durgapur to meet the survivor and her family. NCW member Archana Majumdar expressed concern, stating, “Crimes against women are increasing in West Bengal. The authorities must ensure a fair and speedy investigation.”

State Health Department Seeks Report

The West Bengal Health Department has sought a detailed report from the private medical college regarding the alleged incident. “We have asked the college authorities for a quick and factual report. Appropriate steps will follow based on the findings,” a senior official said.

Police Coordination and Security Measures

The Durgapur Police have strengthened security in and around the college campus. CCTV footage from nearby areas is being reviewed to identify the suspects. “We are using all available resources to verify the sequence of events and bring the culprits to justice,” officials said.

The case has drawn nationwide attention, reviving concerns about women’s safety in educational institutions. Both Odisha and West Bengal authorities are coordinating to ensure support for the survivor and her family.
