Odisha Rooftop Explosion in Bhubaneswar Kills 2

RR Team, February 16, 2026February 16, 2026

Bhubaneswar: A powerful explosion on the rooftop of a house in Odisha’s capital has left two people dead and two others critically injured, triggering a major police investigation into suspected bomb-making activity.

Blast in Sundarpada Area

The incident occurred on January 27 at around 2:45 pm in the Sundarpada locality of Bhubaneswar. Residents reported hearing a loud explosion that shook nearby homes, sending people rushing into the streets in panic.

According to preliminary findings, the blast originated from the rooftop of a residential building where explosive materials were allegedly being handled. Visual evidence from the scene is now part of the ongoing investigation.

Two Succumb to Injuries

Four individuals sustained severe injuries in the explosion and were immediately shifted to a nearby medical facility. Two of them  identified as Shahnawaz Malik and his mother later succumbed to their injuries during treatment.

The other injured persons remain under medical care. Authorities have not disclosed their current condition but described the injuries as serious.

Suspected Bomb-Making Activity

Police sources indicate that explosive substances, including gunpowder, were recovered from the site. Investigators suspect the group was attempting to manufacture improvised explosive devices when the blast occurred.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Jagmohan Meena confirmed that the main injured individual had a prior criminal record. He stated that the explosion appeared to be linked to preparations for a possible criminal act.

“It appears they were planning some kind of criminal activity, for which they might have been making a bomb. Four people were injured in the blast while making the explosives,” the officer said.

Forensic Examination Underway

A forensic team examined the debris and collected samples from the rooftop. Officials are analysing chemical residues to determine the exact composition of the explosive material.

Search operations are also being conducted to ensure no additional explosive substances are stored in or around the premises. Police have tightened surveillance in the area to prevent any related threat.

Authorities are expected to file detailed charges once the investigation establishes the full extent of the alleged conspiracy.

Rising Concerns Over Illegal Explosives

The Odisha rooftop explosion has once again raised concerns about the illegal handling of explosive materials in residential areas. In recent years, similar incidents in the state involving firecrackers, quarry sites, and industrial units have led to multiple casualties.

Under Indian law, the manufacture, storage, and transport of explosives are governed by strict regulations under the Explosives Act and monitored by authorities such as the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO).

Investigation Continues

Police officials say the probe is ongoing and further details will be shared after examining all evidence, including digital and physical material recovered from the site.

While the immediate threat appears contained, authorities are treating the case with urgency given the potential implications of illegal bomb-making activities within city limits.

The Odisha rooftop explosion has left the Sundarpada community shaken, with residents demanding stricter monitoring to prevent such incidents in the future.
