Oleum Gas Leak in Palghar: 2,600 Evacuated

RR Team, March 3, 2026March 3, 2026
Palghar: A major oleum gas leak at a chemical manufacturing unit in Maharashtra’s Palghar district triggered panic on Monday afternoon, forcing authorities to evacuate more than 2,600 people, including 1,600 school students, from the affected area.
The incident occurred around 2 pm at a unit of Bhageria Industries Ltd. located in the Boisar MIDC industrial area. Officials said the leak originated from a 2,500-litre tank containing oleum, also known as fuming sulphuric acid.Strong winds carried a dense cloud of white fumes across an estimated five-kilometre radius, prompting emergency measures and swift intervention by disaster response teams.

Mass Evacuation in Industrial Belt

As a precautionary step, authorities evacuated approximately 1,600 students from a nearby school in Tarapur and over 1,000 workers from the factory and adjacent industrial units. The evacuation was carried out in a phased manner to prevent chaos and ensure safety.

Local police and district officials coordinated with industrial management to clear the premises and nearby residential pockets. The district administration activated its disaster management protocol immediately after the leak was reported.

Palghar District Collector Dr. Indu Rani Jakhar confirmed that containment measures were initiated without delay. The exact cause of the leak remains under investigation.

NDRF, BARC and Fire Teams Mobilised

Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), and the fire brigade were deployed to the site. Initial efforts were hampered by high concentrations of fumes, making access to the leak source difficult.

Equipped with self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), chemical experts and NDRF personnel later managed to identify the leaking tank. Sandbags were strategically placed around the tank to suppress the spread of fumes and contain the hazard.

Authorities stated that the situation was gradually brought under control after containment efforts were intensified.

Minor Health Complaints Reported

At least three individuals reported minor eye irritation following exposure to the fumes and were shifted to nearby hospitals for medical examination. Officials confirmed that no serious injuries or fatalities were reported.

Police Superintendent Yatish Deshmukh, who visited the site, appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid spreading rumours. He assured that all necessary safety measures were being taken.

The district administration also urged people living within the vicinity to stay indoors and follow official advisories until the air quality normalises.

Monitoring and Safety Measures

Authorities said air quality monitoring and chemical assessment were being conducted to ensure there was no lingering threat. Industrial safety experts continue to evaluate the tank structure and surrounding infrastructure.

The incident has once again drawn attention to safety compliance within industrial clusters, particularly in densely populated belts surrounding Mumbai.

Officials stated that a detailed inquiry will determine whether safety protocols were breached and what corrective measures are required to prevent recurrence.

Situation Under Control

By late evening, authorities indicated that the situation was stable, though monitoring operations remained ongoing. Evacuated individuals were allowed to return gradually once the area was deemed safe.

The district administration reiterated its commitment to ensuring public safety and promised transparency in the investigation process.

The oleum gas leak in Palghar serves as a reminder of the critical importance of industrial safety audits and rapid response systems in safeguarding both workers and nearby communities.
