Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed strong concern over a recent grenade attack that injured twelve people at a Sunday market in Srinagar, describing the incident as “deeply disturbing.” Abdullah condemned the targeting of civilians, emphasizing that such acts are unjustifiable. “There is no justification for attacks on innocent people,” he said, urging security forces to intensify efforts to end the recent surge in violence across the region so residents can live without fear.
This attack is part of a series of violent incidents that have shaken the Union Territory in recent days. The central government and the Lieutenant Governor oversee security and law enforcement in Jammu and Kashmir, as it is under the Union Territory administration. Recently, security forces successfully neutralized a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander, Usman, in Srinagar’s Khanyar area, though four security personnel were injured in the operation.
Inspector General of Police for Kashmir, Vidhi Kumar Birdi, confirmed Usman’s identity and his position as a key LeT figure. Security personnel also engaged and killed two other terrorists in an encounter in Anantnag district the day before. Authorities are conducting extensive operations to address the escalating terrorist activity, as civilians continue to grapple with the uncertainty and fear brought on by these attacks.
