Operation Akhal: Day 9 in Kulgam Turns Deadly

RR Team, August 9, 2025

Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district is witnessing one of the most intense counter-terror operations in recent months. Operation Akhal, now in its ninth day, has claimed the lives of two brave Indian soldiers. The Army confirmed the loss on Saturday, adding that the operation is still under way.

How the Operation Began

The mission started on August 1 after security forces received credible intelligence. The input indicated the presence of heavily armed terrorists in the Akhal forest area of south Kashmir. Acting swiftly, the Army, along with the Jammu and Kashmir Police and CRPF, launched a cordon-and-search operation.

The dense forest and difficult terrain posed serious challenges. Yet, forces pushed forward to prevent the militants from escaping or infiltrating nearby villages.

The First Clash

An initial gunfight broke out last Friday. Security forces and militants exchanged heavy fire before darkness forced a pause in the operation. The forces maintained their positions overnight, tightening the cordon and waiting for reinforcements.

The next day, firing resumed. Two unidentified terrorists were neutralised in a fierce exchange. Their identities and group affiliations are still being verified by intelligence agencies.

Loss of Bravehearts

The Army confirmed that two soldiers lost their lives in the ongoing battle. Their sacrifice underlines the high-risk nature of counter-terrorism duties in Jammu and Kashmir. Senior officials, including J&K Police Chief Nalin Prabhat and Northern Army Commander Lt Gen Pratik Sharma, are personally overseeing the operation.

Both soldiers were part of the frontline assault teams operating in treacherous terrain under constant threat of sniper fire and IED traps.

Advanced Tactics in Play

Operation Akhal is making extensive use of technology and specialised units. Drones and helicopters are scanning the forest canopy to detect militant hideouts. Para commandos have been deployed for close-quarter combat and to block potential escape routes.

Security forces have created a strong perimeter to ensure no militant slips through. Villages surrounding the operation area are under strict vigilance to prevent civilian casualties and militant infiltration.

The Bigger Picture: Rising Infiltration Attempts

This operation comes amid a spike in infiltration attempts along the Line of Control. Defence sources report that Pakistan-based groups have been trying to push more militants into Jammu and Kashmir during the summer months when mountain passes are open.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, over 30 infiltration bids were foiled in the first half of 2025 alone. Operations like Akhal are crucial to neutralise these threats before they spread to civilian areas.

Community and Civilian Safety

Authorities have advised locals to stay indoors and avoid the cordoned zones. Medical teams and ambulances are on standby in case of emergencies. The Army has assured that all steps are being taken to minimise disruption to daily life while ensuring the safety of residents.

Local leaders have also urged citizens to cooperate fully with security forces to bring the operation to a swift and safe conclusion.

Nation Stands with the Forces

Messages of condolence and solidarity have poured in from across India. Social media platforms are flooded with tributes to the fallen soldiers. Defence experts note that such operations are a reminder of the constant vigilance required to maintain peace in the region.

As Operation Akhal continues, the focus remains on eliminating the remaining militants and restoring calm to the area.

Key Facts About Operation Akhal

  • Launched on August 1, 2025, in Kulgam district, Jammu and Kashmir.
  • Triggered by specific intelligence on militant presence in Akhal forest.
  • Two unidentified terrorists neutralised so far.
  • Two Indian soldiers martyred in the line of duty.
  • Use of drones, helicopters, and para commandos for precision engagement.

Why It Matters

Operations like Akhal show the complexity of counter-terror efforts in Jammu and Kashmir. They involve not only direct combat but also intelligence gathering, coordination between multiple agencies, and the strategic use of advanced technology.

The outcome of such operations directly impacts national security and the safety of border regions.
