In a heartening stride toward marine conservation, the Indian Coast Guard’s annual initiative ‘Operation Olivia’ has successfully protected over 6.98 lakh Olive Ridley turtles along the Odisha coastline during their mass nesting at the Rushikulya river mouth in February 2025. This remarkable achievement highlights the dedication of the Coast Guard in preserving one of the world’s most vulnerable marine species through vigilant efforts and a deep commitment to environmental stewardship.
Carried out every year between November and May, Operation Olivia plays a vital role in ensuring that Olive Ridley turtles—particularly those nesting at Gahirmatha Beach and nearby coastal regions—have a safe and undisturbed environment to lay their eggs. Odisha’s shores witness the arrival of over eight lakh turtles annually, and the success of this year’s operation underscores the importance of consistent protection and monitoring.
Through more than 5,387 surface patrols and 1,768 aerial surveillance missions since the operation’s inception, the Indian Coast Guard has significantly curbed illegal fishing activities and minimized disruptions to marine habitats. The detention of 366 boats involved in illegal practices this season alone demonstrates the seriousness with which the ICG enforces conservation laws to protect the ecosystem.
Beyond surveillance, the ICG has taken a compassionate and inclusive approach by actively engaging with local fishing communities. They have promoted the use of Turtle Excluder Devices and fostered partnerships with NGOs to enhance awareness about sustainable fishing and marine conservation. These community-based efforts are crucial in fostering a culture of coexistence between traditional livelihoods and environmental preservation.
The record number of turtles safely nesting this year is not just a triumph of enforcement but a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when protection, education, and compassion work hand in hand.
