Opposition Protests Bihar Voter List Revision

RR Team, August 5, 2025August 5, 2025

New Delhi, August 5, 2025: The Monsoon Session of Parliament entered Day 12 with political tension rising as the Opposition staged a dramatic protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar.

INDIA Bloc Stages Protest Outside Parliament

At 10:30 am, leaders of the INDIA bloc gathered at Makar Dwar outside Parliament. The demonstration was aimed at voicing strong opposition to what they allege is a politically motivated exercise — the Special Intensive Revision of Bihar’s voter list.

The protest saw placards, slogans, and calls for immediate debate inside the House. Many MPs claimed the revision could lead to “selective disenfranchisement.”

Parliament Faces More Disruptions

Earlier on Monday, August 4, the Lok Sabha was repeatedly disrupted. Opposition parties raised slogans, demanding a formal discussion on the Bihar voter list revision. With the ruckus continuing, proceedings in the lower house were stalled.

Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day as a mark of respect to veteran MP Shibu Soren, who passed away recently.

PM Modi Addresses NDA Parliamentary Party

In a parallel development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived early Tuesday for the NDA Parliamentary Party meeting. This marked the first such gathering in a long time. The meeting comes at a crucial time, as tensions mount both inside and outside the Parliament.

PM Modi was welcomed with chants and applause from NDA MPs. According to sources, he discussed strategy for upcoming debates and emphasized unity among alliance members amid the stormy session.

Key Bills on the Agenda

Despite ongoing disruptions, some legislative business was on the calendar. Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya is expected to move amendments to the National Anti-Doping Act, 2022.

He is also scheduled to introduce the much-anticipated National Sports Governance Bill, 2025. The bill aims to bring accountability, transparency, and efficiency to Indian sports administration.

Why the Bihar SIR Has Sparked Uproar

The Election Commission began the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar’s electoral rolls earlier this month. The stated goal is to improve accuracy ahead of the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections.

However, Opposition leaders argue that the timing and nature of the revision are suspicious. They allege it could target certain voter groups and benefit the ruling party.

Speaking to The Hindu, a senior Congress leader said, “This isn’t just a bureaucratic exercise. It’s a calculated move to tilt the electoral field.”

INDIA Bloc Demands Transparency

The INDIA alliance is now demanding a full parliamentary discussion on the voter list revision. They also want assurance that no voter will be unfairly removed or excluded from the rolls.

Earlier, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra tweeted, “SIR in Bihar is raising serious constitutional questions. Parliament must speak. Democracy demands it.”

What Lies Ahead for the Monsoon Session

The Monsoon Session, which began on July 22, has seen more disruptions than discussions. So far, only two major debates — on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor — have taken place.

With just days remaining, there’s mounting pressure on both the government and the Opposition to break the deadlock. Whether a consensus will emerge remains to be seen.

Conclusion: A House Divided

The protest outside Parliament today symbolizes deeper tensions within Indian democracy. As the NDA continues its legislative push, the INDIA bloc seems determined to hold the government accountable at every step.

From voter lists to national bills, the Monsoon Session of 2025 is shaping up to be one of the most intense in recent years.
