Parliament Debates Op Sindoor After Pahalgam Attack

RR Team, July 28, 2025July 28, 2025

New Delhi, July 28, 2025: The Monsoon Session of Parliament resumes today with high anticipation. After a week of disruptions, all eyes are on the heated debate surrounding Operation Sindoor — India’s military response to the Pahalgam terror attack.

What is Operation Sindoor?

Operation Sindoor was launched in retaliation to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The attack claimed 26 innocent lives. India responded with decisive military strikes on terror camps across the border.

According to official statements, India’s action destroyed multiple terror infrastructures and damaged key Pakistani air bases. The operation lasted four days. After mounting pressure, Pakistan sought a ceasefire.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the action a “new normal” in India’s anti-terror approach, vowing to treat terrorists and their sponsors the same way.

Parliament Session Resumes After Turmoil

The Monsoon Session began on July 21. Multiple issues repeatedly disrupted the session — including the shocking resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and unrest over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar.

Today marks the sixth day of the session. With 21 sittings planned until August 21, Parliament faces a tight schedule.

Key Ministers to Lead the Debate

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will open the debate in the Lok Sabha. He will be followed by Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and BJP leaders like Anurag Thakur and Nishikant Dubey.

PM Modi is also likely to address the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Sources suggest he may offer a sharp rebuttal to Opposition criticism.

Opposition’s Stand: Intelligence Failure and Global Isolation

The Opposition has slammed the government, alleging intelligence lapses before the Pahalgam attack. Rahul Gandhi argued that India’s foreign policy lacked international support during Operation Sindoor.

Gandhi cited former US President Donald Trump’s mediation claims as evidence of diplomatic isolation. However, the Modi government has firmly denied Trump’s statements, calling them irrelevant and inaccurate.

Delegations and Global Outreach

After Operation Sindoor, the NDA government sent seven delegations to 30 countries. Their mission: explain India’s stance and gain global support.

MPs like Shrikant Shinde, Sanjay Jha, and Harish Balayogi will speak about their visits. Interestingly, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor — who led a delegation to the US and praised the operation — might not be allowed to speak due to party tensions.

More Issues Brewing: SIR in Bihar

Outside Parliament, the Opposition continues its protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. They claim it is a ploy to disenfranchise voters and benefit the BJP in upcoming state polls.

At 10:30 am today, INDIA bloc leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav, will demonstrate at Parliament’s Makar Dwar. Placards reading “Stealing of Indian Rights” and “Death of Democracy” will be on display.

The Election Commission insists the SIR is a legitimate process to clean voter lists. But tensions remain high.

Impeachment Storm: Justice Yashwant Varma

Another major issue rocking Parliament is the impeachment proceedings against Justice Yashwant Varma. A total of 208 MPs from both Houses have signed a petition accusing him of corruption.

This follows a March fire at his Delhi residence, where large amounts of cash were recovered. The Supreme Court’s in-house inquiry concluded that Justice Varma had covert control over the funds.

Justice Varma denies the charges and claims he wasn’t given a fair hearing. The Supreme Court is set to hear his petition today.

What’s Next in Parliament?

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju announced that both Houses will hold a 16-hour debate on Operation Sindoor — the Lok Sabha on Monday and the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

He added that the government would consider debating other issues like the SIR only after this.

Speaker’s Warning to Disruptive MPs

Speaker Om Birla has urged MPs to maintain decorum. He warned that disruptions harm the House’s image and deny young MPs their voice.

Opposition MPs continue to submit adjournment motions demanding immediate debates, despite the Prime Minister assuring that all concerns will be addressed as per procedure.

India at a Crossroads

As Parliament debates national security, electoral integrity, and judicial ethics, the eyes of the nation are on New Delhi. The discussions over Operation Sindoor may well shape India’s future counterterror policy.

With rising global tensions and domestic unrest, this Monsoon Session could be one of the most consequential in recent years.
