In a significant step towards enhancing Patna’s urban landscape, the Bihar State Road Development Corporation Limited (BSRDC) has initiated the “Samagra Udyan Yojana,” a comprehensive green development project along the city’s iconic J P Ganga Path, often referred to as Marine Drive. The project, which stretches over 7 km beside the Ganga River, aims to transform this popular stretch into a lush and serene green zone, offering residents and visitors a much-needed retreat into nature amidst the growing bustle of the city.
With the technical pre-bid process already in motion, the project is poised to bring about a meaningful change, not just in terms of aesthetics but also in terms of environmental and social impact. The first phase of the project, which carries a budget of approximately ₹387 crore, will cover the area from Digha to Sabhyata Dwar near Gandhi Maidan. At the heart of the plan lies a vision to dedicate 90% of the 49.7 hectares to greenery and open spaces, including the plantation of around one lakh herbs and saplings.
One of the project’s most heartwarming initiatives is the creation of a “Mahila Haat”—a dedicated marketplace where women entrepreneurs will be provided permanent stalls to sell their handmade and local products. This move not only promotes financial independence for women across Bihar but also recognizes their invaluable contributions to society. The stalls, designed using eco-friendly materials such as terracotta, will offer a comfortable, heat-resistant space for women to run their businesses throughout the year. This inclusive approach underlines the project’s commitment to sustainable development with a human touch.
Residents and nature lovers can look forward to a butterfly park, food courts, riverfront promenades, and carefully designed gardens. A six-kilometer pedestrian pathway along the river and a brick-laid cycling track will offer safe and eco-conscious commuting and leisure options. An eight-hectare ecological zone inspired by the 27 traditional astronomical constellations will serve both as an educational and cultural space, fostering a deeper connection to natural and historical heritage.
BSRDC officials believe that beyond beautifying the JP Ganga Path, the Samagra Udyan Yojana will play a vital role in curbing pollution, protecting the riverfront from encroachments, and improving the overall urban quality of life. The inclusion of massive parking infrastructure, capable of accommodating over 13,000 two-wheelers and 4,000 four-wheelers, reflects a well-rounded approach to addressing urban challenges.
This project is not just a facelift for the riverfront; it is a heartfelt commitment to building a greener, more inclusive Patna—one where development and nature, tradition and modernity, and progress and sustainability walk hand in hand.
