PM Modi Assam Visit: Airport Terminal, ₹15,600 Cr Projects

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will undertake a two-day visit to Assam on December 20 and 21, during which he will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of development projects worth around ₹15,600 crore. The visit underscores the Centre’s focus on strengthening connectivity, industrial growth, and farmer welfare in the Northeast.
According to official details released by the Press Information Bureau, the Prime Minister’s itinerary includes the inauguration of a landmark airport terminal in Guwahati, homage to martyrs of the Assam Movement, and the launch of a major fertilizer project in Dibrugarh.

Transformative Airport Terminal in Guwahati

On December 20, the Prime Minister will arrive in Guwahati and inaugurate the new Integrated Terminal Building at Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport. He will also take a walkthrough of the facility and address a public gathering.

Spread across nearly 1.4 lakh square metres, the state-of-the-art terminal has been designed to handle up to 1.3 crore passengers annually. Major upgrades to the runway, airfield systems, taxiways and aprons complement the new terminal, significantly enhancing Assam’s aviation capacity.

India’s First Nature-Themed Airport Terminal

The Guwahati airport terminal is being described as India’s first nature-themed airport. Its design draws inspiration from Assam’s biodiversity and cultural heritage under the theme “Bamboo Orchids.” Around 140 metric tonnes of locally sourced Northeast bamboo have been used in its construction.

Design elements include Kaziranga-inspired green landscapes, japi motifs, the iconic one-horned rhinoceros symbol, and 57 orchid-themed columns reflecting the Kopou flower. A unique “Sky Forest” with nearly one lakh indigenous plants offers passengers a forest-like experience upon arrival.

Digital Innovation and Passenger Comfort

The terminal sets new benchmarks in passenger convenience with modern digital features. These include full-body scanners for quick security checks, DigiYatra-enabled contactless travel, automated baggage handling systems, fast-track immigration, and AI-driven airport operations.

These facilities are aimed at ensuring seamless, secure, and efficient travel while positioning Guwahati as a major gateway to the Northeast and Southeast Asia.

Tribute to Assam Movement Martyrs

On December 21, the Prime Minister will visit the Swahid Smarak Kshetra at Boragaon in Guwahati to pay homage to the martyrs of the historic Assam Movement. The six-year-long movement symbolised the people’s collective resolve to safeguard Assam’s identity.

The tribute highlights the government’s recognition of the sacrifices made during the movement and its lasting impact on the state’s socio-political landscape.

Major Fertilizer Project at Namrup

Later the same day, the Prime Minister will travel to Namrup in Dibrugarh district to perform the bhoomipujan for the new brownfield Ammonia-Urea Fertilizer Project of Assam Valley Fertilizer and Chemical Company Limited.

With an estimated investment of over ₹10,600 crore, the project will be developed within the existing premises of Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited. It aims to meet fertilizer requirements of Assam and neighbouring states while reducing import dependence.

Boost to Farmers and Regional Economy

The fertilizer project is expected to generate substantial employment and catalyse industrial revival in Upper Assam. It aligns with the Prime Minister’s vision of farmer welfare, self-reliance in critical inputs, and balanced regional development.

Officials said the project will strengthen agricultural productivity across the Northeast and contribute to long-term economic growth.
