PM Modi Begins Historic Visit to Ghana

RR Team, July 3, 2025July 3, 2025

Historic Diplomatic Moment

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi arrived in Accra on July 2, 2025, marking the first Indian Prime Ministerial visit to Ghana in over three decades. In a significant gesture, President John Dramani Mahama personally welcomed him at Kotoka International Airport. This moment reflected the deep-rooted friendship between the two nations.

The airport’s ceremonial reception highlighted the respect Ghana holds for India. PM Modi’s arrival captured attention not only across Ghanaian media but also among international observers watching India’s deepening outreach to Africa and the Global South.

Strengthening India-Ghana Ties

This visit signals a renewed commitment to India’s partnership with Africa. Ghana, known for its democratic strength and economic resilience, has remained a trusted ally of India in the region.

Throughout his stay, PM Modi will engage in high-level discussions to boost cooperation in:

  • Trade and investment

  • Energy and digital infrastructure

  • Healthcare and agriculture

  • Skill development and education

India has consistently extended support to Ghana through soft loans, scholarships, and technology-sharing programs. Now, both countries aim to elevate this collaboration into new strategic areas.

India and Africa: A Renewed Vision

This visit also reinforces India’s broader diplomatic vision — deepening ties with the Global South. Prime Minister Modi has often emphasized the importance of South-South cooperation. His Ghana visit sends a clear message of solidarity and shared growth.

India remains among the top contributors to development projects in Africa through platforms like the EXIM Bank and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). Ghana, in particular, has benefited from India’s Line of Credit and capacity-building initiatives under ITEC.

A Look Ahead

The PM’s itinerary is expected to include:

  • Address to the Indian diaspora in Accra
  • Visits to key cultural and economic landmarks
  • Agreements on trade facilitation and digital cooperation

Ghana’s growing interest in India’s digital public infrastructure models like Aadhaar and UPI also opens doors for strategic collaboration in fintech.

Conclusion

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Ghana is not just symbolic. It is a practical step toward cementing a stronger South-South partnership. It is also a message — that India stands ready to be a partner in Africa’s growth story, grounded in respect, trust, and mutual benefit.
