PM Modi, Brazil President Lula Reaffirm India–Brazil Partnership

RR Team, January 22, 2026January 22, 2026
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on Thursday held a telephone conversation with the President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, His Excellency Mr. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, during which the two leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment to further strengthen the India–Brazil Strategic Partnership. The discussion reflected the growing momentum in bilateral relations and underscored the intent of both nations to deepen cooperation across a wide range of sectors.

The call, described as warm and forward-looking, came amid sustained engagement between India and Brazil at both bilateral and multilateral levels.

Commitment to Take Ties to Greater Heights

During the conversation, Prime Minister Modi and President Lula reiterated their determination to elevate the India–Brazil Strategic Partnership to new heights in the coming years. Both leaders expressed satisfaction over the steady expansion of bilateral cooperation and agreed that the partnership holds significant potential to contribute to shared prosperity and global stability.

The leaders emphasised that India and Brazil, as large democracies and emerging economies, have complementary strengths that can be harnessed for mutual benefit.

Review of Progress Across Key Sectors

Recalling their meetings last year in Brasília and South Africa, Prime Minister Modi and President Lula took stock of the progress achieved in several priority areas. They noted with satisfaction the advances made in trade and investment, technology collaboration, defence cooperation, and the energy sector.

Both leaders also acknowledged growing engagement in health, agriculture, and people-to-people exchanges, which have strengthened institutional and cultural links between the two countries.

Expanding Economic and Technological Cooperation

The leaders highlighted the importance of enhancing economic ties, particularly in the context of evolving global supply chains and technological transformation. They recognised the role of innovation, digital technologies, and sustainable practices in driving inclusive growth.

India and Brazil, they agreed, can work together to encourage greater business collaboration and investment flows, building on the positive trajectory of recent years.

Defence, Energy and Agriculture Cooperation

Prime Minister Modi and President Lula also discussed cooperation in defence and energy, identifying these sectors as key pillars of the strategic partnership. They noted that collaboration in renewable energy and sustainable development aligns with the shared priorities of both nations.

In agriculture, the leaders recognised the scope for deeper engagement through knowledge-sharing, research, and best practices, given the importance of the sector to both economies.

Exchange of Views on Global and Regional Issues

Beyond bilateral matters, the two leaders exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest. They underlined the importance of dialogue and cooperation in addressing shared challenges, including those related to development, climate, and global governance.

Both leaders also stressed the need for reformed multilateralism that better reflects contemporary realities and gives greater voice to developing countries.

Multilateral Engagement and Shared Vision

India and Brazil have long cooperated in multilateral forums, and the leaders reiterated their commitment to working closely on issues of global importance. They agreed that collaboration among like-minded nations is essential to ensure a more inclusive and equitable international order.

The conversation reaffirmed the convergence of views between New Delhi and Brasília on strengthening multilateral institutions to respond effectively to global challenges.

Invitation to Visit India

Prime Minister Modi conveyed that he looked forward to welcoming President Lula to India at an early date. Such a visit, he noted, would provide an opportunity to further deepen bilateral engagement and chart new avenues of cooperation.

The invitation reflects the importance both leaders attach to sustained high-level exchanges in advancing the India–Brazil partnership.

Growing Strategic Relationship

The telephone conversation highlights the steady evolution of India–Brazil relations, rooted in shared democratic values, respect for sovereignty, and a commitment to global peace and development.

As both countries continue to expand their engagement across sectors, the renewed commitment expressed by Prime Minister Modi and President Lula signals a strong foundation for future cooperation.
