PM Modi Chairs AI Startups Roundtable Ahead of India AI Summit

RR Team, January 8, 2026January 8, 2026
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday chaired an important roundtable interaction with leading Indian artificial intelligence start-ups, underscoring the government’s commitment to building a robust, ethical and globally competitive AI ecosystem. The meeting, held at the Prime Minister’s residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, comes ahead of the India AI Impact Summit 2026, scheduled to be hosted in the country next month.

A total of 12 Indian AI start-ups, selected under the Foundation Model Pillar of the upcoming summit, participated in the roundtable. These start-ups presented their ongoing work and future vision, offering the Prime Minister a glimpse into the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence innovation in India.

Diverse AI Applications Showcased

The participating start-ups are working across a wide spectrum of AI-driven domains. Their solutions include Indian language foundation models, multilingual large language models (LLMs), speech-to-text, text-to-audio and text-to-video technologies. Several companies are also developing generative AI tools for 3D content creation, aimed at transforming e-commerce, marketing and personalised digital experiences.

Other start-ups showcased advanced engineering simulations, material research platforms and high-end data analytics tools that enable data-driven decision-making across industries. Healthcare diagnostics and medical research powered by artificial intelligence also featured prominently during the presentations, reflecting AI’s growing role in improving healthcare outcomes.

India Emerging as a Global AI Hub

During the interaction, startup leaders highlighted the rapid growth and immense future potential of the AI sector in India. They observed that the global centre of gravity for artificial intelligence innovation and deployment is gradually shifting towards India, supported by a strong digital public infrastructure, a large talent pool and proactive policy support.

The entrepreneurs commended the government’s clear vision and sustained efforts to advance the artificial intelligence ecosystem. According to them, India today offers an enabling environment for AI research, development and large-scale deployment, firmly positioning the country on the global AI map.

PM Modi: Startups Are Co-Architects of India’s Future

Addressing the participants, Prime Minister Modi emphasised that startups and AI entrepreneurs are the co-architects of India’s future. He noted that the country possesses a unique combination of innovation capacity and the ability to implement solutions at scale, which can set India apart in the global technology landscape.

The Prime Minister said that through the India AI Impact Summit, India aims to play a leading role in shaping the future of technology. He stressed that artificial intelligence has the potential to bring transformative changes across sectors and significantly improve the quality of life for citizens.

Focus on Ethical, Inclusive and India-Centric AI

Prime Minister Modi highlighted that trust is India’s biggest strength on the global stage. He stressed the importance of ensuring that Indian AI models are ethical, unbiased and transparent, and that they adhere strictly to data privacy principles. According to him, responsible AI development must remain at the core of India’s technological progress.

He also encouraged startups to work towards global leadership from India by promoting affordable and inclusive AI solutions. Emphasising frugal innovation, the Prime Minister said India can offer AI models that are not only cutting-edge but also accessible and beneficial to a wider global population.

Notably, the Prime Minister suggested that Indian AI models should reflect the country’s cultural diversity by promoting local and indigenous content as well as regional languages. He called for a distinct “Made in India, Made for the World” approach to artificial intelligence.

Government Assures Full Support

Reassuring the startup ecosystem, Prime Minister Modi assured full government support for the success of Indian AI models. He said the government would continue to facilitate policy frameworks, infrastructure and partnerships necessary to help startups scale their innovations globally.

The roundtable was attended by CEOs and senior representatives from leading AI firms including Avataar, BharatGen, Fractal, Gan, Genloop, Gnani, Intellihealth, Sarvam, Shodh AI, Soket AI, Tech Mahindra and Zenteiq. Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw and Minister of State Jitin Prasada were also present.

The interaction marks another step in India’s journey towards becoming a trusted global leader in artificial intelligence, driven by innovation, responsibility and inclusivity.
