PM Modi Condoles Pithoragarh Road Tragedy

RR Team, July 16, 2025July 17, 2025
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the tragic road accident in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand, that claimed multiple lives on July 15, 2025.In a heartfelt message, he extended condolences to the bereaved families and announced financial assistance from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).

A Tragic Day in Pithoragarh

The accident took place in the hilly district of Pithoragarh, known for its steep roads and challenging terrain. According to local authorities, a vehicle carrying several passengers skidded off a narrow mountain road and plunged into a gorge.

The crash led to the death of multiple people and left many others seriously injured. Emergency teams, including disaster response forces, rushed to the site. Rescue operations continued for hours amid difficult weather and terrain.

Prime Minister’s Condolence and Support

Soon after receiving the news, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) through the official PMO India handle. He wrote:

“Saddened by the loss of lives due to a road accident in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones in the mishap. May the injured recover soon.”

In addition to his words of sympathy, he also announced immediate financial support.

Ex-Gratia Compensation from PMNRF

To aid the victims’ families, the Prime Minister approved an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh each for the next of kin of those who lost their lives. The injured will receive ₹50,000 each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).

This swift announcement aims to offer immediate relief to families dealing with sudden grief and hardship.

Government’s Prompt Response

The Uttarakhand state government and the district administration launched a quick response. Teams from the police, local volunteers, and medical services collaborated to ensure timely medical attention to the injured.

According to local officials, arrangements were made for transferring critical patients to hospitals in Haldwani and Dehradun. Some were airlifted due to the severity of their injuries.

Recurring Road Accidents in Hilly Regions

The Pithoragarh tragedy adds to a series of road accidents in the hilly regions of India. These areas, especially in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, often face accidents due to landslides, narrow roads, sharp turns, and overloading.

In 2024 alone, over 1,200 road accidents were reported in Uttarakhand (Source: Ministry of Road Transport and Highways), many of them in the hilly districts. Experts have been urging for improved road infrastructure, better signage, and stricter transport regulations in these areas.

Need for Better Road Safety Measures

While rescue operations help in the short term, long-term solutions are essential. The National Road Safety Policy advocates for guardrails, emergency helplines, and trained drivers in hilly areas.

Prime Minister Modi has also emphasized the importance of road safety under his vision of “Zero Fatality Corridors.”

This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of how urgent such infrastructure reforms are, especially in vulnerable zones like Pithoragarh.

Emotional Toll on the Community

The loss has shaken the local community. Families have lost their loved ones in the blink of an eye. Survivors now face both physical pain and emotional trauma.

Villagers and neighbors gathered at the homes of the deceased to offer prayers and support. Local NGOs have also stepped in to provide counseling and food support.

These moments highlight the resilience of ordinary Indians and the strength of community solidarity in times of tragedy.
