PM Modi Congratulates Koneru Humpy on FIDE Rapid Bronze

RR Team, December 29, 2025December 29, 2025
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated Indian chess grandmaster Koneru Humpy for winning the bronze medal in the women’s section at the 2025 FIDE World Rapid Chess Championship held in Doha, Qatar. Praising her determination and consistency, the Prime Minister described her achievement as a proud moment for Indian chess on the global stage.

Koneru Humpy delivered a strong performance against a highly competitive international field, finishing among the world’s top players in one of chess’s most demanding formats. Her bronze medal adds another significant chapter to India’s growing success story in international chess.

Prime Minister’s Message of Appreciation

Prime Minister Modi shared his congratulatory message on social media platform X, acknowledging Humpy’s dedication and perseverance. He noted that her strong finish at the championship reflects years of discipline, focus, and hard work at the highest level of the sport.

“Congratulations to Koneru Humpy, who finished strongly at the 2025 FIDE World Rapid Chess Championship in Doha, securing the Bronze medal in the women’s section. Her dedication towards the game is commendable. Best wishes for the endeavours ahead,” the Prime Minister wrote.

A Prestigious Global Championship

The FIDE World Rapid Chess Championship is among the most prestigious events on the international chess calendar. Featuring shorter time controls, the rapid format demands quick decision-making, sharp tactical vision, and exceptional mental resilience from players.

The 2025 edition in Doha attracted the world’s leading chess players, making Humpy’s podium finish a notable achievement. Competing against elite opponents, she demonstrated composure and strategic clarity throughout the tournament.

Koneru Humpy’s Enduring Legacy in Indian Chess

Koneru Humpy has long been one of India’s most accomplished chess players. A former World Rapid Chess Champion, she has consistently represented India with distinction across classical, rapid, and blitz formats over the past two decades.

Her sustained excellence has played a crucial role in popularising chess in India, particularly among young girls aspiring to compete at the international level. Humpy’s career stands as a testament to longevity and resilience in a sport that demands constant adaptation.

India’s Rising Profile in Global Chess

India’s performance at global chess events has witnessed a remarkable rise in recent years, with players across age groups and formats achieving international success. Koneru Humpy’s bronze medal further reinforces India’s reputation as a chess powerhouse.

Government initiatives, institutional support, and a growing chess culture have contributed to this surge. Recognition from the country’s leadership has also served as a source of encouragement for players competing on the world stage.

Inspiration for the Next Generation

Humpy’s achievement in Doha is expected to inspire aspiring chess players across the country. Her ability to compete at the highest level against younger and equally skilled opponents highlights the importance of experience, preparation, and mental strength.

Sports analysts believe that such performances play a vital role in motivating grassroots participation and strengthening India’s talent pipeline in mind sports.
