PM Modi Lauds INSV Kaundinya’s Maiden Voyage to Oman

RR Team, December 29, 2025December 29, 2025
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on Monday lauded the Indian Navy, shipbuilders, and traditional artisans as INSV Kaundinya embarked on her maiden voyage from Porbandar in Gujarat to Muscat, Oman. Built using the ancient Indian stitched-ship technique, the vessel stands as a remarkable tribute to India’s rich maritime heritage and centuries-old seafaring traditions.

The Prime Minister described the journey as a historic moment that reconnects modern India with its deep-rooted maritime past. He congratulated everyone involved in the construction of the ship, calling it a fine example of innovation guided by tradition.

A Revival of the Ancient Stitched-Ship Technique

INSV Kaundinya has been constructed using the stitched-ship technique, an ancient Indian method where wooden planks are sewn together using natural fibres rather than being nailed. This technique was widely used by Indian shipwrights centuries ago and enabled long-distance maritime trade across the Indian Ocean.

The revival of this technique required close collaboration between traditional craftsmen, maritime historians, naval architects, and the Indian Navy. The project reflects India’s commitment to preserving intangible cultural heritage while adapting it to modern standards of safety and navigation.

Prime Minister’s Message on X

Sharing his thoughts on social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi expressed pride in the vessel and the people behind it. He said it was wonderful to see INSV Kaundinya embark on her maiden voyage and highlighted how the ship showcases India’s ancient maritime traditions.

The Prime Minister extended his best wishes to the crew for a safe and memorable journey, noting that the voyage symbolically retraces India’s historic links with the Gulf region and beyond.

Strengthening Historic India–Gulf Maritime Links

The voyage from Porbandar to Muscat holds special historical significance. For centuries, Indian traders, sailors, and scholars sailed these waters, fostering cultural, economic, and civilisational exchanges between India and the Gulf region.

INSV Kaundinya’s journey serves as a reminder of these ancient connections and highlights India’s role as a maritime civilisation long before the modern era. The initiative also complements India’s broader efforts to strengthen cultural diplomacy with West Asian nations.

Indian Navy’s Role in Cultural Preservation

The Indian Navy played a central role in conceptualising and supporting the project, ensuring that traditional craftsmanship met contemporary maritime requirements. The vessel’s successful launch underscores the Navy’s growing involvement in preserving India’s naval history alongside safeguarding national security.

Officials have described the project as a unique blend of heritage, skill, and seafaring excellence.

A Symbol of India’s Living Heritage

INSV Kaundinya is not merely a ship but a floating symbol of India’s living heritage. It reflects the spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat by recognising the value of indigenous knowledge systems and traditional skills.

By celebrating ancient maritime practices, the project reinforces India’s identity as a nation that draws strength from its past while navigating confidently towards the future.
