PM Modi Launches ₹2,700 Cr Projects in Puducherry

RR Team, March 1, 2026March 1, 2026

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched and laid the foundation stone for development projects worth over ₹2,700 crore in Puducherry, giving a major push to infrastructure, healthcare, education, connectivity and tourism in the Union Territory. Addressing a public gathering, the Prime Minister said the initiatives would accelerate Puducherry’s journey towards becoming a developed region by 2047.

Greeting the people with “Vanakkam,” the Prime Minister described Puducherry as a land of saints, poets and freedom fighters, recalling the contributions of Mahakavi Subramania Bharati, Sri Aurobindo and The Mother in shaping India’s spiritual and nationalist consciousness.

Focus on Infrastructure and Investment

Highlighting the Centre’s commitment to infrastructure growth, the Prime Minister noted that a record ₹12 lakh crore has been allocated in the Union Budget for infrastructure development nationwide. Puducherry, he said, is benefiting from this momentum through inclusion in the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment Scheme.

He emphasised that improved roads, water supply systems, coastal infrastructure, schools and hospitals directly enhance the quality of life. In Puducherry town alone, projects worth over ₹1,000 crore have been announced, including a ₹440 crore flyover aimed at easing traffic congestion.

Major road upgrades are underway to strengthen connectivity with Chennai via the East Coast Road and Grand Southern Trunk Road. The travel time between Puducherry and Chennai is expected to reduce to approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. The Puducherry-Cuddalore National Highway has already been completed, while the Karaikal National Highway is being upgraded.

Boost to Education and Youth Employment

Calling youth empowerment the backbone of growth, the Prime Minister highlighted the inauguration of the new Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Engineering Block and modern hostel facilities at NIT Karaikal. Infrastructure upgrades at Pondicherry University, including lecture halls and girls’ hostels, were also announced.

He said thousands of government vacancies in Puducherry have been filled in recent years, many of which had not seen recruitment examinations for decades. The Prime Minister congratulated the newly recruited youth and said transparent recruitment strengthens governance.

Healthcare Expansion and Medical Tourism Vision

Healthcare remains a top priority, the Prime Minister said, reiterating the government’s vision of accessible, affordable and quality treatment for all. Under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, millions of families across India are receiving financial protection for medical care.

In Puducherry, the modernisation of the Regional Cancer Centre at JIPMER will enhance treatment capacity. The foundation stone was also laid for three Critical Care Blocks under the PM-ABHIM scheme in Puducherry and Karaikal to strengthen emergency services.

The Prime Minister said Puducherry has the potential to emerge as a medical tourism hub, supported by its nine medical colleges and the upcoming Integrated AYUSH Hospital in Karaikal. He also highlighted the region’s legacy in Siddha medicine and holistic healthcare.

Green Mobility and Urban Development

Under the PM e-Bus Sewa initiative, electric buses were introduced to promote clean and sustainable urban transport. The Prime Minister said such initiatives are especially beneficial for tourism-driven regions like Puducherry, helping reduce pollution.

Housing projects across Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam were also launched, aimed at providing stability and dignity to families. Water desalination plants and new Sewage Treatment Plants are expected to ensure clean drinking water and improved waste management.

Efforts are also underway to address flooding and waterlogging during monsoons, enhancing overall ease of living.

Tourism and Spiritual Heritage

Describing tourism as one of Puducherry’s greatest strengths, the Prime Minister said the Union Territory already attracts thousands of visitors as a popular weekend destination. Investments in spiritual, eco and health tourism are expected to take this growth further.

Under the PRASHAD scheme, pilgrimage infrastructure at temples is being developed. The Prime Minister welcomed the commencement of a Global Spiritual Mahotsav in Auroville, describing it as a platform that unites people across regions and faiths.

Vision for Developed Puducherry by 2047

The Prime Minister said Puducherry played a vital role in India’s freedom movement and must now lead in the journey towards a developed India by 2047. He reiterated his vision of “BEST Puducherry” Business, Education, Spirituality and Tourism and said coordinated efforts between the Centre and the Union Territory administration are yielding results.

Concluding his address, the Prime Minister affirmed that the government will continue working towards building a developed Puducherry as part of the larger goal of a developed India.
