PM Modi Launches Surat Food Security Campaign, Strengthening Support for the Poor and Promoting Inclusive Growth

RR Team, March 7, 2025March 8, 2025

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Surat Food Security Saturation Campaign Programme in Limbayat, Surat, marking a significant step in the country’s mission toward food and nutrition security. As part of the initiative, benefits under the National Food Security Act were distributed to over 2.3 lakh beneficiaries, reinforcing the government’s commitment to ensuring that no one in need is left behind.

Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister spoke about Surat’s unique spirit of collective growth and generosity, emphasizing that the city has always led by example in supporting its people. He praised the city’s efforts in taking the lead in ensuring food and nutrition security for marginalized communities, setting a model for other districts across the country. He highlighted that this campaign is not just about providing food but about ensuring dignity, fairness, and inclusion in the distribution of essential resources. The approach, he said, ensures that the most vulnerable sections of society—elderly citizens, widows, differently-abled individuals, and low-income families—receive the assistance they deserve without any discrimination or exploitation.

Shri Modi reiterated that his government has always stood by the poor, not as mere policymakers but as true partners in their journey toward a better life. Reflecting on his own experiences, he noted that the struggle for food security is not just a statistic for him but something he deeply understands. This commitment was evident during the COVID-19 pandemic when the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana was introduced to ensure that no one went hungry. The initiative, one of the largest of its kind, continues today, with the government investing nearly ₹2.25 lakh crore annually to provide free rations to those in need.

Beyond immediate food security, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of nutrition in building a healthy and prosperous nation. He highlighted key government programs such as the PM Poshan Scheme, which provides nutritious meals to 12 crore school children, and the Saksham Anganwadi Program, which focuses on the well-being of mothers and young children. The PM Matru Vandana Yojana, which offers financial support to pregnant women for a healthy diet, was also mentioned as a crucial step toward addressing malnutrition and anemia. Shri Modi emphasized that clean water and hygiene are equally important components of nutrition, commending Surat for its sanitation efforts and linking these initiatives to the broader success of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and Har Ghar Jal campaign.

He also acknowledged the transformative impact of the “One Nation, One Ration Card” scheme, which has been particularly beneficial for migrant workers in Surat. By linking ration distribution to Aadhaar, the government has eliminated over 5 crore fake ration cards, ensuring that benefits reach the rightful recipients. The ability to access subsidized food anywhere in the country has provided a significant relief to millions of migrant laborers who contribute to Surat’s vibrant economy.

Expanding on his government’s decade-long mission to uplift the underprivileged, the Prime Minister spoke about initiatives aimed at improving overall living conditions. The construction of pucca houses, provision of gas connections, clean drinking water, and healthcare coverage through the Ayushman Bharat scheme have collectively strengthened the social security net for millions. Insurance schemes that were once out of reach for the poor have now become a reality, with over 36 crore beneficiaries enrolled, receiving claims worth ₹16,000 crore during times of crisis.

Recognizing the challenges faced by small entrepreneurs and daily wage workers, Shri Modi highlighted the Mudra Yojana, which has provided nearly ₹32 lakh crore in collateral-free loans, enabling millions to start or expand their businesses. He pointed out that the PM SVANidhi Yojana has helped street vendors access formal credit, freeing them from the burden of high-interest loans from moneylenders. To further support self-employed workers, the government has introduced a special credit card, ensuring financial inclusion for those who were previously overlooked. The PM Vishwakarma Yojana, aimed at traditional artisans, is another initiative providing training, modern tools, and financial aid to skilled workers, empowering them to contribute to India’s economic growth.

Shri Modi also emphasized the government’s focus on strengthening the middle class, which plays a crucial role in the nation’s development. Tax relief measures introduced in the latest budget, including zero tax on incomes up to ₹12 lakh and exemptions for salaried employees up to ₹12.87 lakh, will allow families to retain more of their earnings. He encouraged the people of Surat, known for their entrepreneurial spirit, to take full advantage of government schemes supporting small and medium enterprises. Loan assistance of up to ₹2 crore for SC, ST, Dalit, tribal, and women entrepreneurs will further boost economic activity in the city, creating more job opportunities.

Highlighting Surat’s role as a key industrial hub, the Prime Minister spoke about ongoing infrastructure projects that will enhance the city’s connectivity and ease of living. The expansion of Surat Airport, the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, the upcoming Bullet Train, and the Surat Metro project are all set to transform the city into one of the most well-connected urban centers in the country. These projects, he said, are not just about modernizing infrastructure but about improving the quality of life for the people of Surat.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Shri Modi encouraged women across India to share their inspiring stories through the NaMo app. He announced that he would be handing over his social media accounts to women who have made outstanding contributions to society, as a tribute to their achievements. The Prime Minister also shared his plans to attend a major women’s empowerment event in Navsari, reaffirming the government’s unwavering commitment to gender equality and the upliftment of women in all sectors.

Concluding his address, the Prime Minister expressed his deep appreciation for Surat’s dynamic and hardworking people, calling the city a “mini India” that embodies the country’s progress and aspirations. He assured the people that his government would continue working tirelessly to ensure that Surat remains a shining example of development, prosperity, and inclusivity. Congratulating all the beneficiaries of the food security initiative, he wished them continued success and a brighter future ahead.
