PM Modi Marks 11 Years of Jan Dhan Yojana Success

RR Team, August 29, 2025August 28, 2025

PM Modi Celebrates 11 Years of Jan Dhan Yojana: A Milestone in Financial Inclusion

On August 29, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commemorated the 11th anniversary of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), India’s flagship financial inclusion initiative launched in 2014. Over the past decade, PMJDY has revolutionized access to banking services, empowering millions of underserved citizens and fostering economic growth.

Transforming Financial Access

Since its inception, PMJDY has facilitated the opening of over 56 crore (560 million) bank accounts, with total deposits exceeding ₹2.68 lakh crore. Notably, 56% of these accounts are held by women, underscoring the scheme’s role in promoting gender equality in financial access. Approximately 67% of the accounts are in rural or semi-urban areas, ensuring that even the most marginalized communities are included in the formal financial system.

Direct Benefit Transfer and Digital Empowerment

PMJDY has been instrumental in the success of the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system, channeling over ₹6.9 lakh crore into beneficiaries’ accounts during the fiscal year 2024–25. The initiative also introduced the Jan-Dhan-Aadhaar-Mobile (JAM) trinity, a diversion-proof mechanism for subsidy delivery. Additionally, more than 38 crore free-of-cost RuPay cards have been issued, facilitating digital transactions and enhancing financial literacy.

Prime Minister’s Message

Reflecting on the scheme’s impact, Prime Minister Modi shared on social media: “When the last mile is financially connected, the entire nation moves forward together. That is exactly what the PM Jan Dhan Yojana achieved. It enhanced dignity and gave people the power to script their own destiny.” His message highlights the transformative power of financial inclusion in uplifting individuals and communities.

Re-KYC Update: A Crucial Step

As part of ongoing efforts to maintain the integrity of the PMJDY accounts, account holders are required to complete a re-KYC (Know Your Customer) process. This is especially pertinent for accounts that have been inactive or have zero balances. The deadline for completing this process is September 30, 2025. Special camps are being organized across various panchayats to assist account holders in updating their KYC details. Failure to comply may result in account deactivation.
