Remembered as the ‘Bihar Kokila’, Sinha’s melodious voice gave life to traditional Chhath songs that continue to resonate across generations.

PM Modi’s Tribute

Sharing his message on X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Modi wrote in Hindi,”My heartfelt tribute to Bihar’s Nightingale Sharda Sinha on her first death anniversary. She gave a new identity to Bihar’s art and culture through folk songs, for which she will always be remembered. His melodious songs related to the great festival Chhath will always remain etched in the minds of the people.

In English, the Prime Minister said, “She gave a new identity to Bihar’s art and culture through folk songs, for which she will always be remembered. Her melodious songs associated with the great festival Chhath will forever remain etched in the hearts of the people.”

A Voice that Defined Bihar’s Folk Legacy

Born in Samastipur district of Bihar, Sharda Sinha rose to fame as a singer whose voice captured the soul of India’s folk traditions. Her songs in Bhojpuri, Maithili, and Magahi languages celebrated rural life, devotion, and cultural pride. Known for her humility and classical training, she became a household name, especially during the Chhath Puja festivities.

Her compositions such as “Hey Chhathi Maiya” and “Uga Ho Suruj Dev” are integral to the spiritual rhythm of the Chhath festival. They not only evoke devotion but also reflect the essence of Bihar’s social and emotional fabric.

National Recognition and Cultural Legacy

Over her long career, Sharda Sinha received numerous accolades, including the Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri awards, for her contribution to Indian music. She was affectionately titled ‘Bihar Kokila’  the Nightingale of Bihar  for her soulful renditions that united tradition and modern sensibility.

Beyond her songs, Sinha symbolized the preservation of India’s folk identity in an era of changing musical tastes. Through her art, she inspired countless new artists to explore and revive regional folk genres. Her music continues to be played in homes and temples during the annual Chhath Puja, a testament to her lasting influence.

PM Modi’s Emphasis on Cultural Icons

The Prime Minister’s tribute highlights his ongoing commitment to celebrating India’s cultural luminaries. By remembering figures like Sharda Sinha, he reinforces the message that the nation’s strength lies not only in economic progress but also in preserving its spiritual and cultural traditions.

In recent years, PM Modi has often spoken about the importance of folk arts, regional languages, and grassroots artists in shaping India’s cultural identity. His tribute to Sinha echoes this sentiment  acknowledging how her music transcended boundaries and reached millions.

Public Reaction and Continued Reverence

Following the Prime Minister’s message, fans, artists, and political leaders across Bihar and beyond shared their memories of the late singer. Social media was filled with nostalgic clips of her performances, with listeners recalling how her songs made Chhath celebrations feel complete.

Many cultural groups in Bihar also organized small musical gatherings in her memory, ensuring her voice continues to echo through community festivities. For millions, Sharda Sinha remains a symbol of devotion, simplicity, and cultural pride.
