PM Modi Pays Tribute to Pingali Venkayya

RR Team, August 3, 2025August 2, 2025

Remembering the Architect of the Tricolour

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid heartfelt tribute to Pingali Venkayya on his birth anniversary today. Recognized as the man who conceptualized the design of the Indian National Flag, Venkayya holds a revered place in India’s freedom movement. In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi wrote:

“Tributes to Pingali Venkayya Ji on his birth anniversary. He is remembered for his role in giving us the Tricolour, which is our pride! Like always, let’s strengthen #HarGharTiranga movement and fly the Tricolour. Do upload your selfie or photos on harghartiranga.com.”

The Legacy of Pingali Venkayya

Born on August 2, 1876, in the Machilipatnam region of present-day Andhra Pradesh, Pingali Venkayya was not only a freedom fighter but also a scholar and linguist. He proposed the design of the national flag during the All India Congress Committee session in 1921, which later evolved into the Tricolour we proudly hoist today.

His contribution is officially recognized by the Indian government, and his birth anniversary is commemorated annually to celebrate national unity and pride.

#HarGharTiranga Movement

PM Modi’s tribute also served as a renewed call to action under the popular #HarGharTiranga campaign. Initiated under the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’, the campaign encourages citizens to hoist the national flag at their homes, offices, and institutions.

With the official Har Ghar Tiranga portal, people can now upload selfies and photos with the flag, fostering a digital celebration of patriotism.

Citizens Respond with Enthusiasm

Within hours of the Prime Minister’s post, the campaign began trending on social media platforms. Citizens, celebrities, and government officials started posting their photos with the national flag, making it a people’s movement once again.

Last year, over 60 crore Indians participated in the initiative. This year, with growing digital awareness, the number is expected to be even higher. The Ministry of Culture has also launched awareness drives to reach rural and remote areas.

Why the Tricolour Matters

The Indian Tricolour represents more than just a nation. It symbolizes sacrifice (saffron), peace (white), and growth (green), while the Ashoka Chakra stands for justice and motion. Honoring the flag is an act of respect toward the freedom fighters who made India independent.

Pingali Venkayya’s design laid the foundation of this national identity, making his contribution timeless and sacred.

PM’s Continued Focus on National Symbols

Prime Minister Modi has consistently emphasized respect for India’s national symbols. Initiatives like the National Flag Code amendment and Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav reflect this priority. His tribute to Pingali Venkayya reaffirms the government’s commitment to remembering lesser-known heroes of the freedom struggle.

How You Can Participate

  • Hoist the national flag at your home, workplace, or neighborhood.
  • Click a selfie or take a group photo with the flag.
  • Upload your picture to the official portal: harghartiranga.com
  • Share it on social media using hashtags like #HarGharTiranga and #VenkayyaJayanti.
