PM Modi Plants Sindoor Sapling to Honour 1971 Women Warriors

New Delhi, June 5, 2025:
On the occasion of World Environment Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi planted a Sindoor sapling at his residence in New Delhi. This sapling carries a deeply emotional and patriotic significance, as it was gifted to him by the courageous women of Kutch, Gujarat, who played a remarkable role during the 1971 India-Pakistan war.

The Prime Minister described the planting as a symbol of India’s Nari Shakti (women power), blending environmental consciousness with a tribute to the nation’s heroic past. He shared the moment with citizens via a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter).

“On World Environment Day, I had the honour of planting the Sindoor plant gifted by the brave mothers and sisters of Kutch, Gujarat, who showed extraordinary courage during the 1971 war. This sapling will forever remain a strong symbol of their bravery and inspiration,” he posted.

PM Modi also reflected on his recent visit to Gujarat, where he met the women and families who gifted him the plant. He called the experience moving and powerful, reinforcing the strength and role of women in India’s social and historical fabric.

The Sindoor plant (Vermilion tree), often linked with sacred rituals and Indian traditions, holds deep symbolism. In this context, it stands for courage, sacrifice, and the enduring spirit of the Indian woman.

🪖 Honouring the Women of Kutch

During the 1971 Indo-Pak war, the women of Kutch became national icons of courage. In a region affected by cross-border tensions, they stood beside Indian soldiers, helped with logistics, and contributed to safeguarding the nation. Many stories of bravery emerged from these villages, passed down through generations.

By planting the Sindoor sapling, PM Modi commemorated their selfless contributions, integrating environmental efforts with national remembrance.

🌍 World Environment Day Significance

The act also aligns with India’s commitment to environmental protection. As the world marks World Environment Day 2025, PM Modi’s gesture sends a dual message—environmental awareness and cultural pride. His action highlights how small, symbolic steps can reflect larger values like heritage, respect for nature, and national pride.

The Prime Minister has consistently promoted a sustainable lifestyle through campaigns like “LiFE – Lifestyle for Environment”, which calls for responsible consumption and care for nature. This sapling planting adds another personal layer to that global message.

🪔 A Living Memorial

The Sindoor plant will now grow within the Prime Minister’s residence as a living memorial to the courage of India’s women, especially those from the remote regions who often remain unsung heroes. It reminds the country of the power of tradition, sacrifice, and unity.

In his message, PM Modi said the sapling will always remain a powerful symbol of bravery and inspiration—a testimony not just to the past but a call to the future generations to uphold values of courage and service.
