PM Modi Receives Sri Lanka’s Highest Civilian Honour, Symbolising Deepening India-Sri Lanka Friendship

RR Team, April 5, 2025April 5, 2025

During his first official visit to Sri Lanka in his third term as Prime Minister, Narendra Modi was honoured with the Mithra Vibhushana medal—Sri Lanka’s highest civilian award for foreign dignitaries. The moment was deeply symbolic, representing more than just a diplomatic gesture; it was a heartfelt recognition of the enduring friendship and shared history between the two nations.

The Mithra Vibhushana medal was specially instituted to acknowledge extraordinary global friendships. In Prime Minister Modi’s case, it acknowledges his consistent efforts in nurturing and strengthening the age-old ties between India and Sri Lanka. Speaking with humility and warmth upon receiving the honour, he said, “This isn’t just an honour for me, but for the 140 crore Indians. It reflects our deep-rooted relationship and the mutual respect between our peoples.”

This visit is especially significant as it follows Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s own state visit to India, his first international trip after assuming office. In a reciprocal spirit, Prime Minister Modi became the first foreign leader to visit Sri Lanka since President Dissanayake took charge. This symbolic exchange highlights the mutual priority both nations place on their bilateral relationship, underscoring a partnership grounded in trust and shared values.

The medal itself is rich in cultural symbolism. Designed with the Dharma Chakra, it pays tribute to the shared Buddhist legacy of both countries. The Pun Kalasa, filled with sheaves of rice, speaks of prosperity and new beginnings, while the nine embedded gems—the Navarathna—encased in lotus petals, convey purity and enduring friendship. The sun and moon engraved into the medal further reinforce the timeless nature of the India-Sri Lanka bond, hinting at a relationship that transcends eras and looks to the future with hope.

Over the years, India has extended a helping hand during Sri Lanka’s times of need—from the tragic 2019 Easter bombings to the trials of the COVID-19 pandemic. This support has not gone unnoticed and has only deepened the emotional and cultural ties between the two neighbours.

With this recognition, Prime Minister Modi has now received 22 international honours from foreign governments, a testament to his growing global presence. But more than a personal achievement, this award is seen as a celebration of the spirit of cooperation, regional solidarity, and a shared vision for South Asia.

As both leaders commit to furthering collaboration in areas like cultural exchange, infrastructure, security, and economic development, this visit sets a hopeful tone for the future. It stands as a reminder that when neighbours walk together in friendship, their steps echo far beyond their borders.
