PM Modi Responds to Trump Tariffs with Farmers First Pledge

RR Team, August 7, 2025August 7, 2025

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has hit back at Donald Trump’s aggressive tariff hike. He declared that India is ready to pay any price to protect its farmers.

The US has doubled tariffs on Indian goods to 50% due to India’s ongoing oil trade with Russia. But PM Modi stood firm. He said India’s national interest and the well-being of farmers, fishermen, and dairy workers will never be compromised.

India’s Strong Message to Washington

Modi’s statement came just a day after former US President Donald Trump announced an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods. Combined with earlier tariffs, the total has now reached 50%.

Trump’s reason? India’s continued import of Russian oil, which he claims threatens US interests. But Modi made it clear — India buys oil based on its energy needs and market prices, not political pressure.

“I know there could be political costs for me. But I am prepared to pay them for my country and its farmers,” said the PM during a public event in New Delhi.

MEA Calls the Move ‘Unfair and Unreasonable’

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) strongly criticized the US action. Officials called it “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable.”

The MEA highlighted that many countries are still importing oil from Russia. Singling out India, they said, was both biased and politically motivated.

“India’s energy needs come first,” an MEA spokesperson said. “We are home to 1.4 billion people. Affordable energy is not a luxury but a necessity.”

Trump Hints at More Sanctions

Trump didn’t stop at tariffs. In a press briefing, he suggested possible “secondary sanctions” on countries buying Russian oil — including India and even China.

“It’s only been a few hours since this decision,” Trump said. “There may be more actions soon.”

When asked if China could face similar measures, Trump replied, “Absolutely possible. It depends on how they behave.”

India’s Firm Stand on Oil Imports from Russia

India has consistently defended its trade ties with Russia. Officials maintain that oil imports are based on economic logic and not geopolitical games.

In fact, India has significantly increased its oil purchases from Russia since 2022. The reason is simple — Russian oil is cheaper and helps India maintain lower fuel prices domestically.

Modi’s government has repeatedly said this strategy benefits Indian consumers and reduces the import bill.

Indian Farmers at the Core of Policy

PM Modi’s speech was emotionally charged. He stated that his government will always put farmers first — no matter the global pressure.

“Our farmers feed the nation. Their future cannot be bargained at the altar of diplomacy,” Modi said.

He also mentioned support for fishermen and dairy workers, emphasizing that India’s rural economy is the backbone of its growth story.

Tariffs Timeline: What Happens Next?

The US has announced that the new 25% tariff will begin 21 days after August 7. This is in addition to the existing 25%, making it a full 50% duty on Indian goods.

Products already in transit or covered under exemptions won’t be affected. But exporters fear this could impact textile, pharma, and electronics sectors the most.

Industry and Investor Reactions

Indian businesses have raised concerns. Many exporters say the new tariff may make Indian products uncompetitive in US markets.

However, the government has promised support. Commerce Ministry officials are exploring alternate markets and may boost export incentives.

Investors are watching closely too. Experts believe this may create short-term volatility but won’t derail long-term trade ties with the US.

India-Russia Strategic Alignment Grows

Meanwhile, India and Russia have signed new agreements in aluminium, railways, and defense. This signals stronger economic cooperation, especially as the West continues to isolate Moscow.

These agreements are also India’s message to the world: it will choose partners based on national priorities, not foreign pressure.

Conclusion: A Defining Moment in Trade Diplomacy

PM Modi’s bold response to Trump’s tariff hike marks a new chapter in India’s foreign policy. It sends a clear signal — India will protect its farmers, stand by its trade interests, and not bow to external threats.

While tensions may rise temporarily, India’s stand for economic sovereignty and agricultural pride will resonate with millions.

In Modi’s words, “India will walk on its path — with head held high and roots grounded in the soil of its farmers.”
