PM Modi to Dedicate Three New Criminal Laws to the Nation in Chandigarh

On December 3, 2024, at 12 noon, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate to the nation the successful implementation of three transformative new criminal laws—the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam. The event will take place in Chandigarh.

These laws were conceptualized as part of the Prime Minister’s vision to replace colonial-era legal provisions that persisted after India’s independence. The goal is to modernize the judicial system, shifting the focus from mere punishment to achieving true justice. Accordingly, the theme of the event is “Secure Society, Developed India – From Punishment to Justice.”

Implemented nationwide on July 1, 2024, these new criminal laws aim to make India’s legal system more transparent, efficient, and relevant to contemporary challenges. They represent a historic reform of the criminal justice system, addressing issues such as cybercrime, organized crime, and ensuring justice for victims of various offenses.

The programme will highlight the practical application of these laws, including a live demonstration of a crime scene investigation, where the new frameworks will be showcased in action, illustrating how they are already transforming the criminal justice landscape.
