PM Modi Visits Uttarakhand’s Mukhba Temple for Maa Ganga Darshan Ahead of Char Dham Yatra

RR Team, March 6, 2025March 6, 2025

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit the historic Mukhba Temple in Uttarakhand today, where the idol of Maa Ganga resides during the winter months. This visit, ahead of the 2025 Char Dham Yatra, holds deep spiritual significance, as Mukhba serves as the winter abode for the goddess when heavy snowfall renders the Gangotri Temple inaccessible. Before the grand pilgrimage season begins in May, the idol will be carried back to Gangotri in a ceremonial procession, a tradition steeped in devotion and reverence.

The Prime Minister’s visit underscores the growing focus on enhancing religious tourism in Uttarakhand, a state known as “Devbhoomi” (Land of the Gods). Last year, a record 50 lakh pilgrims undertook the Char Dham Yatra, and with improved infrastructure, an even higher footfall is anticipated this year. Mukhba, situated on the banks of the Bhagirathi River, offers not just spiritual solace but also breathtaking views of the Himalayas, making it a crucial stop for devotees and nature lovers alike.

Expressing his excitement, Prime Minister Modi remarked that Mukhba is not only a site of immense religious significance but also a testament to India’s commitment to preserving its heritage while fostering development. His visit comes at a time when the government is making significant efforts to improve accessibility to major pilgrimage sites. Just a day earlier, the union cabinet approved two major ropeway projects to Kedarnath and Hemkund Sahib, aiming to ease the journey for pilgrims. Additionally, a long-awaited rail link connecting Rishikesh to Karnaprayag is progressing rapidly, with a key 13.5-km tunnel set to be completed next year. These developments are expected to transform the pilgrimage experience, making it safer and more accessible for all.

During his time at Mukhba, the Prime Minister is likely to be presented with the traditional “Chapkan” attire by the temple committee, a gesture symbolizing respect and cultural heritage. His itinerary also includes a visit to Harsil, where he will address a public gathering and flag off a trek and bike rally, further promoting tourism in the region.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami welcomed the Prime Minister’s visit, emphasizing that it would provide a significant boost to the state’s tourism sector. Over the past few years, Uttarakhand has seen a steady rise in tourism revenue, with the Garhwal Mandal Development Corporation (GMVN) reporting a surge in turnover from ₹3,146 lakh in 2020-21 to ₹8,145 lakh in 2023-24. This growth has been fueled by expanding tourism initiatives, including homestays, adventure tourism, and religious circuits. Officials believe the Prime Minister’s presence will further encourage winter tourism, which has already gained momentum as a key economic driver for the state.

For devotees and locals alike, the Prime Minister’s visit to Mukhba is more than just a political event—it is a moment of faith, tradition, and renewed hope. As the sacred idol of Maa Ganga rests in its winter retreat, the anticipation of its return to Gangotri in May symbolizes the enduring cycle of devotion that has carried on for generations. With the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance pilgrimage infrastructure, the spiritual journey to these revered Himalayan shrines is set to become more inclusive, accessible, and deeply enriching for millions.
