Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed deep concern over the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza during a bilateral meeting with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in New York, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed the meeting, stating, “PM @narendramodi met H.E. Mahmoud Abbas, President of Palestine. The PM expressed deep concern about the humanitarian situation in Gaza and reaffirmed India’s continued support to the people of Palestine.
In a joint statement, India reiterated its long-standing commitment to a two-state solution that considers both Palestine’s sovereignty and Israel’s legitimate security concerns. “We remain committed to a sovereign, viable, and independent Palestinian state, alongside Israel, enabling both to live in a just, lasting, and secure peace,” the statement read.
The statement also called for an end to any unilateral actions that undermine the prospects of a two-state solution, including Israeli settlement expansion and violent extremism from all sides. It stressed the importance of preventing further escalation of the conflict in the region.
Despite India’s strong condemnation of the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, the country has consistently voiced concerns about the deteriorating situation in Gaza. As part of its ongoing humanitarian commitments, India has provided financial aid to Gaza, including an initial installment of $2.5 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for Palestinian refugees for the 2024-25 fiscal year.
India’s balanced approach continues to support peace, stability, and humanitarian relief in the region, advocating for both Palestinian rights and Israel’s security.
