PM Modi’s Historic Visit to Jeddah Strengthens India-Saudi Ties, Focuses on Hajj and Strategic Partnerships

Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a significant two-day visit to Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, April 22, at the invitation of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. This trip marks a historic moment, as it is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the city of Jeddah in four decades. The visit carries hopes of strengthening ties between the two nations, with the signing of at least six key agreements and discussions on issues close to the hearts of many Indians, including the Hajj pilgrimage.

As the Prime Minister departed for Jeddah, he expressed warmth and optimism, highlighting the deep-rooted and evolving partnership between India and Saudi Arabia. From defence and energy to trade, investment, and cultural connections, Mr. Modi emphasized that both countries share a commitment to regional peace, stability, and prosperity. He referred to the Crown Prince as “my brother,” signaling the personal rapport the two leaders enjoy and the mutual respect that underpins their diplomatic relationship.

This visit also serves as an opportunity to deepen people-to-people connections. Mr. Modi shared his eagerness to engage with the vibrant Indian diaspora in Saudi Arabia, who he praised as a living bridge between the two nations. Their contributions to the kingdom’s development and to India’s image abroad have long been cherished, and the Prime Minister’s recognition of their role adds a deeply human touch to the visit.

One of the central themes of this trip is the ongoing coordination between India and Saudi Arabia over the Hajj pilgrimage. With India’s Hajj quota increased to 175,025 for 2025, compared to 136,020 in 2014, there is evident progress. However, challenges remain—due to delays by some travel operators, about 42,000 Indian pilgrims may not be able to perform the sacred journey this year. The Prime Minister is expected to raise this concern directly with the Crown Prince, underscoring the government’s sensitivity to the emotional and spiritual aspirations of its people.

During his stay, Mr. Modi and the Crown Prince will co-chair the second meeting of the Strategic Partnership Council, established during the Prime Minister’s 2019 visit to enhance bilateral cooperation. The agreements expected to be signed span across vital sectors such as space, energy, healthcare, science and technology, and cultural exchange, reflecting the breadth of the growing relationship.

There is also a symbolic aspect to this visit. Jeddah, historically a hub of Indo-Arab trade and the gateway for Indian pilgrims heading to Mecca, holds a special place in the shared history of the two nations. Indian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Suhel Ajaz Khan, highlighted this significance, noting that Jeddah continues to be a central link in the emotional and logistical bond between the countries.

In a touching gesture, Mr. Modi is also scheduled to visit a local factory employing Indian workers, a move that reflects his continued engagement with Indian citizens living and working abroad. His acknowledgment of their efforts and presence is a source of pride and reassurance for thousands of families back home.

As the Prime Minister’s visit unfolds, it brings with it a renewed sense of cooperation, compassion, and commitment. This is more than a diplomatic engagement—it is a reflection of shared values, enduring ties, and a hopeful vision for the future of both nations.
