PM Surya Ghar: 30 Lakh Homes Go Solar

RR Team, February 23, 2026February 23, 2026
India’s clean energy transformation received a significant push as 30 lakh households adopted rooftop solar power under the PM Surya Ghar scheme. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi described the achievement as a “commendable milestone” in the country’s journey toward energy security and sustainability.
The Prime Minister congratulated beneficiaries across the nation who have embraced rooftop solar installations, highlighting how the initiative is strengthening savings, promoting sustainability and advancing self-reliance among citizens.

A Major Step in India’s Clean Energy Journey

Responding to a post by Union Minister Shri Pralhad Joshi, the Prime Minister reiterated that the PM Surya Ghar initiative forms a core part of the Government’s broader strategy to build an energy-secure, green and future-ready India.

He emphasized that the growing adoption of rooftop solar power reflects citizens’ active participation in India’s renewable energy movement. The milestone of 30 lakh installations marks a substantial rise in decentralized solar energy generation across urban and rural households.

According to official data released by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the scheme has witnessed rapid implementation across multiple states, benefiting middle-class families as well as economically weaker sections.

Boosting Savings and Self-Reliance

The PM Surya Ghar scheme aims to reduce household electricity bills by enabling families to generate their own solar power. By installing rooftop panels, beneficiaries not only cut down their monthly expenses but also contribute surplus energy to the grid wherever net metering policies apply.

The Prime Minister noted that such initiatives enhance financial resilience while supporting India’s climate commitments. With rooftop solar systems in place, households gain greater control over energy consumption and reduce dependence on conventional power sources.

The scheme also aligns with the Government’s push for Atmanirbhar Bharat by encouraging domestic solar manufacturing and expanding employment opportunities in installation and maintenance services.

Strengthening India’s Renewable Targets

India has set ambitious renewable energy goals, including expanding solar capacity as part of its commitment to global climate action. Rooftop solar plays a crucial role in diversifying energy sources and reducing carbon emissions.

Experts believe that distributed solar generation lowers transmission losses and strengthens grid stability. The 30 lakh household milestone signals growing awareness and acceptance of renewable solutions among citizens.

The government continues to provide financial assistance and streamlined processes to encourage further adoption.

Citizen Participation Driving Change

Beyond policy measures, the scheme’s success reflects active public participation. Urban housing societies, individual homeowners and rural families have increasingly opted for rooftop solar installations.

The Prime Minister’s message underscored that clean energy transformation is not solely a government effort but a collective national movement. By choosing solar power, citizens are directly contributing to environmental protection and long-term economic stability.

With 30 lakh households already on board, the PM Surya Ghar scheme stands as one of the largest rooftop solar adoption drives globally. The government is expected to accelerate implementation in the coming months to expand coverage and deepen impact.

As India advances toward its renewable energy targets, the milestone serves as both a benchmark and a motivation for continued progress in sustainable development.
