Historic First for Indian Currency
The commemorative coin features the national emblem on one side and a striking image of Bharat Mata in Varada Mudra, accompanied by a lion, on the other. The design also depicts RSS swayamsevaks bowing in devotion, symbolizing service and dedication to the nation. This marks the first time Bharat Mata has been represented on official Indian currency.
Speaking at the launch, PM Modi described the occasion as a “moment of pride” for independent India. He emphasized that the coin reflects the nation’s cultural identity and the RSS’s century-long contribution to discipline, social service, and nation-building.
RSS Motto and Stamp Release
The coin carries the RSS motto, “Rashtray Swaha, Idam Rashtraya, Idam Na Mama”, which translates to “Everything is dedicated to the nation, everything belongs to the nation, nothing is mine.” Alongside the coin, a postage stamp was released featuring RSS swayamsevaks marching in the 1963 Republic Day Parade, underlining the organization’s historic role in public life.
The centenary celebrations were organised by the Ministry of Culture and attended by senior leaders including RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.
RSS at 100 Years
Founded in 1925 by Keshav Baliram Hedgewar in Nagpur, the RSS began as a volunteer organisation with the aim of fostering cultural awareness, unity, and discipline among citizens. Over the past century, it has grown into one of the most influential socio-cultural organisations in India, inspiring various national movements and serving as the ideological backbone for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
PM Modi, himself a former RSS pracharak, highlighted his personal connection with the organisation and credited its values for shaping his public life and leadership journey. He described the coin and stamp as a tribute to Bharat Mata and the RSS’s unwavering service to society.
National Significance
The release of the coin and stamp is seen as both a cultural and political milestone. It underscores the government’s acknowledgment of the RSS’s role in shaping India’s identity and its century-long contributions to society. The move also resonates with national pride, as Bharat Mata’s depiction reinforces values of unity, devotion, and patriotism.
