Power Minister Reviews Hydroelectric Projects in J&K

RR Team, January 4, 2026January 4, 2026
Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Shri Manohar Lal, commenced a two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir to review key hydroelectric projects managed by NHPC. Accompanied by Shri Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary (Power), the Minister focused on the Salal, Sawalkot, and Ratle projects, highlighting the need for timely execution, environmental conservation, and optimal utilization of water resources.

Salal Hydroelectric Project: Sediment Removal and Plantation Drive

On the first day, Shri Manohar Lal visited the Salal Power Project in Reasi district. The Minister was briefed by Shri Bhupendra Gupta, CMD, NHPC, on the ongoing operations, particularly the sediment removal activities. These works have been prioritized following the termination of the Indus Waters Treaty, aiming to maximize the reservoir’s water usage.

In addition to reviewing technical operations, the Minister participated in a plantation drive within the Salal Power Station premises, reinforcing the Government’s commitment to sustainable development. Meetings with local administration and department officials were held to ensure coordinated efforts for project execution.

Sawalkot Hydroelectric Project: Aerial Inspection

Enroute to Kishtwar, Shri Manohar Lal conducted an aerial survey of the Sawalkot Hydroelectric Project, which has a capacity of 1,856 MW. The inspection provided an overview of project progress and ongoing construction activities, ensuring alignment with scheduled timelines and safety standards.

Ratle Hydroelectric Project: Foundation Stone and Progress Push

In Kishtwar, the Minister visited the Ratle Hydroelectric Project where he laid the foundation stone for dam concreting works. He encouraged the project team to complete the construction in an effective and time-bound manner, emphasizing the importance of adherence to quality and safety norms. Ratle is a key power generation asset in the region, expected to significantly enhance J&K’s electricity capacity.

Government Focus on Sustainable Development

During his visit, Shri Manohar Lal underscored the significance of balancing infrastructure development with environmental conservation. Plantation drives and coordinated administration efforts reflect the Government’s emphasis on sustainable practices. These hydroelectric projects are pivotal for regional energy security, economic growth, and efficient utilization of water resources in Jammu & Kashmir.
