Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin: Transforming Rural Housing with Over 2.69 Crore Homes Completed

RR Team, February 7, 2025February 8, 2025

The Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) continues to transform rural India by providing affordable housing to millions of families. Launched on April 1, 2016, with the vision of “Housing for All,” the scheme aims to assist 4.95 crore eligible rural households with basic amenities by March 2029. As of February 2, 2025, a total of 3.79 crore houses have been allocated to States and Union Territories, out of which 3.34 crore have been sanctioned, and 2.69 crore houses have been completed.

In a significant move, the Union Cabinet has approved the implementation of PMAY-G for the financial years 2024-25 to 2028-29, allowing for the construction of an additional two crore houses. For the year 2024-25 alone, 84.37 lakh houses have been allocated to 18 states, including Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. Of these, 39.82 lakh houses have already been sanctioned, reinforcing the government’s commitment to providing dignified living conditions in rural India.

PMAY-G has played a crucial role in enhancing rural livelihoods, reducing poverty, and improving living standards. Independent institutions such as the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, NITI Aayog, and the National Institute of Rural Development & Panchayati Raj have evaluated the scheme, highlighting its positive impact on rural housing. The initiative is closely monitored to ensure quality construction and timely completion. Beneficiary data, construction progress, and fund disbursements are tracked using AwaasSoft, a digital platform that enables transparency. Additionally, geo-tagged photographs taken at each stage of construction provide real-time updates.

Field visits by national monitors and ministry officials help assess progress, ensure proper beneficiary selection, and maintain quality standards. A robust grievance redressal mechanism, including the Centralized Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS) and state-level helplines, allows citizens to report any concerns. Payments under PMAY-G are made directly into beneficiaries’ bank accounts through Aadhaar-linked Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), minimizing the risk of fund misuse.

By providing safe and well-constructed homes, PMAY-G is more than just a housing scheme—it is a step toward social and economic empowerment, giving millions of rural families a foundation for a better future. The government remains dedicated to achieving its vision of universal housing, ensuring that every rural household has access to a secure and dignified home.
