Prataprao Jadhav Hails Padma Shri Dr Padma Gurmet

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for AYUSH and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, has congratulated Dr Padma Gurmet, Director of the National Institute of Sowa Rigpa (NISR), Leh, on being conferred the prestigious Padma Shri award. The honour recognises Dr Gurmet’s decades-long contribution to the preservation, promotion, and modern integration of India’s traditional medical systems.
In his message, Shri Jadhav described the Padma Shri as a fitting tribute to a life dedicated to safeguarding India’s ancient medical heritage. He said Dr Gurmet’s work has played a crucial role in bringing Sowa-Rigpa, the traditional Himalayan system of medicine, into the national healthcare discourse.

Recognition for Sowa-Rigpa and Traditional Medicine

Sowa-Rigpa, deeply rooted in the cultural and healing traditions of Ladakh and the trans-Himalayan region, has long remained outside the mainstream healthcare framework. Under Dr Gurmet’s leadership, the National Institute of Sowa Rigpa has emerged as a key institution working to conserve classical knowledge while promoting scientific validation and public awareness.

Shri Jadhav noted that Dr Gurmet’s efforts have helped bridge the gap between traditional wisdom and modern health systems. By encouraging research, education, and institutional development, he has strengthened the credibility of Sowa-Rigpa within the broader AYUSH ecosystem.

Minister Hails Decades of Service

The AYUSH Minister emphasised that the Padma Shri award reflects Dr Gurmet’s unwavering commitment, scholarship, and service over several decades. He said the recognition goes beyond individual achievement and symbolises national acknowledgement of traditional medicine practitioners who have quietly served society.

According to Shri Jadhav, Dr Gurmet’s journey demonstrates how indigenous medical systems can contribute meaningfully to preventive and holistic healthcare when supported by institutional vision and policy backing.

Boost to AYUSH Mission

The Ministry of AYUSH has been actively working to mainstream traditional systems such as Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Sowa-Rigpa. Officials believe that honours like the Padma Shri to experts in these fields reinforce the government’s commitment to pluralistic healthcare.

Shri Jadhav stated that Dr Gurmet’s achievement would inspire young practitioners and researchers to pursue careers in traditional medicine with renewed confidence. He added that the entire AYUSH fraternity feels proud of this moment.

National and Cultural Significance

Experts note that Sowa-Rigpa is not merely a medical practice but a reflection of Himalayan cultural heritage. By institutionalising its study and practice, Dr Gurmet has helped ensure that this knowledge system is passed on to future generations.

The Padma Shri recognition is expected to further enhance global awareness of India’s diverse traditional medicine systems.
