“Prataprao Jadhav Opens Unani Centre, Leads Day 2026”

RR Team, February 14, 2026February 14, 2026
Mumbai: Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Ayush, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, inaugurated the renovated co-location centre of the Regional Research Institute of Unani Medicine (RRIUM) at the historic JJ Hospital campus in Mumbai and presided over the Unani Day 2026 celebrations.

Strengthening Integrative Healthcare

The upgraded facility, originally established in 1984, has been renovated at a cost of nearly Rs 3.84 crore. The enhancement is designed to expand clinical services, improve research infrastructure, and provide patient care in an integrative setting that combines Unani and modern medicine.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Jadhav said the renovation reflects the government’s commitment under Prime Minister Narendra Modi to integrate traditional systems into a modern, patient-centric healthcare framework. He emphasized that innovation and scientific validation would define the future of Unani medicine.

Innovation and Evidence as Key Pillars

Speaking at the National Conference on “Innovation and Evidence in Unani Practice,” organised by the Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM), the Minister said, “Innovation and evidence are the two pillars that will shape the next era of Unani medicine.”

He urged institutions like CCRUM and RRIUM Mumbai to focus on high-quality clinical research, drug standardisation, and translational studies. He also encouraged the use of advanced tools such as genomics and artificial intelligence to deepen scientific understanding of Unani principles.

Maharashtra’s Commitment

Maharashtra Co-operation Minister Shri Babasaheb Patil highlighted the importance of accessible and affordable healthcare through traditional systems. He noted that Unani medicine provides effective solutions, especially for underserved communities and patients with chronic conditions.

He reaffirmed the state’s support for expanding Indian systems of medicine by strengthening infrastructure and widening access in both urban and rural areas.

Global Recognition and Standards

Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha said the 10th Unani Day celebrations reflect significant progress in research output, institutional growth, and patient care over the past decade. He pointed out that the Ministry is working closely with the World Health Organization to establish global benchmarks in Unani education and practice.

Key milestones include WHO benchmark documents for training and practice, inclusion of Unani morbidity codes in the ICD-11 Traditional Medicine chapter, and ongoing classification of health interventions.

Unity in Diversity of Healthcare

Dr. Maneesha V. Kothekar, Chairperson of the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM), said Unani stands alongside Ayurveda, Siddha, and Sowa-Rigpa in reflecting India’s unity in diversity within healthcare traditions.

The event also saw the unveiling of institutional initiatives, including CCRUM publications, collaborative portals, mobile applications, exchange of MoUs, and NABL certification for the Biochemistry and Pathology Laboratory at RRIUM Mumbai.

Building a Strong Ecosystem

Shri Jadhav concluded that strengthening centres like RRIUM Mumbai will help build a robust ecosystem for Unani medicine in public health, prevention, and chronic disease management. By aligning traditional knowledge with modern scientific standards, the government aims to position Unani as a globally benchmarked healthcare system.
